Problems with BMW 3 Series (2013) - Black smoke, unstable engine running and possible boost pressure system fault

Hello everyone, I currently have a problem with my 2013 BMW 3 Series (petrol engine). I have noticed black smoke when accelerating, an illuminated check engine light, loss of engine power, unstable engine running, jerking and hissing when accelerating. I suspect a problem with the boost pressure system, but I'm not sure. Have any of you had similar experiences or perhaps have an idea what the problem could be? I would be particularly interested to know how your garages have solved the problem and what your experiences have been. Thanks in advance for your help!

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a 2013 BMW 3 Series experiencing black smoke, unstable engine running, and suspected boost pressure system fault. The symptoms include an illuminated check engine light, loss of engine power, jerking, and hissing when accelerating. The problem could be due to mechanical damage to the turbocharger, as suggested by a participant who had a similar issue. The recommended solution is to have the car inspected by a professional, with the possibility of replacing the turbocharger, even though the repair cost might be high.

Hello, I had a similar problem with my 2011 BMW 5 Series. Black smoke, illuminated engine control light, jerking and hissing when accelerating, all this seemed very familiar to me. After I described the problem to my garage, they determined that it was mechanical damage to the turbocharger. The repair cost me 1070 euros. To be able to say more precisely whether it could be the same problem, it would be helpful to know exactly which model you have and whether any repairs have been carried out so far. More details could help me understand the situation better. I hope this helps you!

Hi, thanks for your reply! My model is a 325i and hasn't had any major repairs apart from the usual inspections. What you say makes sense - possibly the turbocharger is the problem. The black smoke and that whistling sound are extremely annoying to me. The 1070 euros for the repair sounds a bit hefty, but if it solves the problem, I'd be reassured. I'll talk to my garage and see if it's the same problem with my car. Many thanks for your helpful input!

Hey, I know that too, maybe I can help with my experience. With the symptoms you've described, it definitely sounds like a problem with the turbocharger. I had the same black smoke and that annoying whistling. And the effects on performance and stability were frustrating too. The repair costs for a turbo are quite high. But I can assure you, once the problem is fixed, you will feel a huge difference. Maybe see if you can get a cheaper used spare part. But try not to put it off for too long. For me, it only got worse over time. All the best and hopefully you'll get it sorted soon!

It sounds like your radio unit might be causing a drain on your battery, especially in cold weather. It's possible that the radio unit itself is faulty or there's a wiring issue. I would recommend having a mechanic inspect the radio unit and its wiring for any signs of damage or malfunction. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions?
