Problems with BMW 3 Series (2010, diesel): Loss of power, jerking and dark smoke - suspected defective swirl flaps

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Stalling while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Hello folks! I need your experience and tips. My BMW 3 Series from 2010, diesel, no longer runs cleanly. I'm really at a loss. The check engine light is on, it has no more power, jerks when accelerating and doesn't pick up the gas well. In addition, it likes to stall at idle and when accelerating, dark smoke comes out of the exhaust. My guess is that something is wrong with the swirl flaps of the intake manifold. Do any of you know this? How did you get this fixed at your garage and what were your experiences? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey, I had the same problem with my BMW 3 Series Diesel from 2008, almost the same model. The garage found that the swirl flap was broken. The repair cost 865 euros at the time, which wasn't exactly cheap, but afterwards it ran like a dream again. Maybe I can help you a bit better if you give me a bit more information. Which model version do you have exactly? Perhaps the 3 Series sedan or the Touring? And could you give me a few more details about the problem? Is the engine making strange noises or anything like that? Hopefully this is a bit helpful!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply and the info. Actually, I drive a 320d sedan. And yes, every now and then the engine makes this weird whistling noise, especially when I step on the gas. Ah man, that sounds like expensive fun... 865 euros is really a lot, but if it helps, I guess I have no other choice. I'll ask my garage what they think. Thanks for your help in any case!

Hi, I had exactly the same problem as you with my 2009 diesel 3 Series. It's probably really down to the swirl flaps. At my garage, they replaced the entire intake manifold including the swirl flaps because the flap was broken, just like the other buddy here. The repair cost me around 900 euros, including labor and materials. It was expensive fun, but afterwards the car was fit again. The whistling noise can also indicate a defect in the swirl flaps, because I had that too. That's my experience with it - it was expensive, but everything worked perfectly again afterwards. It's best to talk to your garage and see what they say. Good luck with that!

Hey, thanks for your reply! It does seem that the swirl flaps are the problem. Your tip with the complete replacement also sounds logical, although it is a bit expensive. It's reassuring to hear that your car ran perfectly again afterwards. The whistling noise does seem to be an indication of the problem. I'll discuss it with my garage and hope for the best. Thanks again for your help and advice! I'll let you know as soon as I have any news.
