Problems with BMW 3 Series (2008): Black smoke, indicator light, loss of power and exhaust odor
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A BMW 3 Series (2008) is experiencing issues such as black smoke during acceleration, an indicator light on, loss of power, an exhaust leak, and a strong exhaust odor. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the NOx catalytic converter, possibly due to it being heavily loaded or aged. A similar case involved replacing the catalytic converter, which resolved the issues. It is recommended to have the vehicle checked by a garage to confirm the diagnosis and proceed with necessary repairs.

Thanks for the answer! My 3 Series already has 156201 kilometers on the clock and the last service was almost exactly a year ago. I'm afraid I won't be able to avoid the catalytic converter. It looks like I'll have to accept a major repair as well. Hopefully it won't be too expensive.

No problem, that's what we're here for! Given the mileage, an ageing catalytic converter is fairly typical. The price of replacement can vary depending on where you get it done. When I had mine changed, the garage gave me an estimate of around 1300 euros, but I've also heard of people who were lucky enough to pay less. Don't worry too much though! Only your garage can give you an exact price. And remember, even if it hurts now, it's better to fix the problem in the long run. After the replacement, your BMW should run normally again and you will certainly notice the difference. Just get it checked out to see what exactly is wrong. Good luck with that!

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it! I'll get the car to the garage as soon as possible and prepare for the estimate. Hopefully I'll be as happy as you are afterwards. The BMW is a great car despite the problems and it would be a shame to give it up because of a broken catalytic converter. Thanks again for the support!

Hi, your problem sounds very similar to what I had with my BMW 1 Series (built in 2010). I only have a little experience in cars, so I decided to take it straight to the garage. In my case, the NOx catalytic converter was heavily loaded and aged. They completely replaced the catalytic converter in the workshop, which cost me 1350 euros. Since then, my car has been running like clockwork and the problem with the black smoke has also gone. But to be able to help you more precisely, it would be helpful if you had a little more information about the vehicle. For example, how many kilometers has the car covered and when was the last time it was serviced?
