Problems with BMW 1 Series (2009) - suspected misalignment of crankshaft and camshaft. Looking for experience and solutions.

Check engine light on

Engine shuts off by itself

Weird engine noise

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Car won't start

Hello, I've been having some problems with my 2009 BMW 1 Series (petrol engine) recently. The engine cuts out all by itself, loses power, runs rough and the car won't start. There is also a strange engine noise and the check engine light is on. I suspect that something is wrong with the position of the crankshaft to camshaft or that there is damage to the timing chain. Have any of you ever had similar problems and could give me some troubleshooting tips? I am particularly interested in how you got this solved in the workshop and what your experiences were. Many thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm not a car mechanic, but I do have some experience with cars. I had a similar problem with my 2007 BMW 3 Series, where I also noticed all these symptoms. My garage found that the timing chain was elongated - exactly what you suspect. It was quite an expensive repair, costing me 1500 euros. But since then it has been running perfectly again. Have you ever read out the fault memory? That could provide more information about your problem. If you have any more details about your car, I could try to help you further. Good luck!

Hi, thank you for the answer. I must have omitted to mention something. My 1 Series last had a service at 236814 km, during which the timing chain was replaced. The fault memory was also read out, but nothing came up. In any case, it's good to know that you also had an experience like this and that the repair helped. I can't wait to see what my garage says next time I'm there. Thanks again and see you there!

Hey, thanks for the info, that makes it a bit easier. So, the timing chain can actually be ruled out as it has already been replaced. Then, of course, it could be the crankshaft or camshaft sensor that is defective and therefore misinterprets the values. Or the timing was set slightly incorrectly when the timing chain was replaced; I would have this checked again in a workshop. Good luck and keep us up to date!

Hey, I guess you're right. I've already made an appointment with the garage and will follow your advice. I hope that only one sensor is defective as you say. Maybe the sensor plug or something was damaged when the timing chain was replaced. Thanks for the tips and the encouraging word! I'll let you know when I have any news. See you then and have a nice day!
