Problems with black smoke, reduced engine power and possible defective NOx sensor in 2010 BMW 1 Series gasoline engine

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my 2010 BMW 1 Series gasoline engine. There are black clouds coming out of the exhaust when accelerating, the check engine light is on, engine power has dropped, there is an exhaust leak and the exhaust smells pretty bad. I suspect the NOx sensor could be faulty. Have any of you ever had the same problem and can give me tips on how to narrow it down? How did the garage solve it for you and what experiences have you had with it? Thank you for your help!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2008 BMW 3 Series. I'm not a mechanic, but I've spent quite a few hours in the garage, so I'd say I have some experience. In my case, the NOx sensor control unit was internally defective. I had it replaced at a specialist garage and paid around 395 euros for it. Does your problem occur immediately after starting or after a certain period of driving? Perhaps a software update could also help? Which engine is installed in your 1 Series? I can help you better with a little more information.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! So my problem tends to occur after a longer period of driving and I have the N47D20C engine installed. Last inspection was at 174512 km, when everything was still ok with the exhaust. I haven't considered a software update yet, but it sounds like a good idea! Thanks for the tip.
