Problems with acceleration, black smoke and engine performance in the 2017 Mercedes AMG GT

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

DPF regeneration failure

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey guys, I have a really unusual problem with my 2017 Mercedes AMG GT gasoline engine. When accelerating, it spits out black smoke, the check engine light is on, it loses engine power and the engine runs rough. There seems to be a problem with the DPF regeneration and the fuel consumption has also become worse. I think it could be the exhaust back pressure sensor. Have any of you had similar experiences? How did you get this solved in the workshop and what were your experiences? I would really appreciate your tips!

Hi buddy, I had a similar problem with my 2015 Mercedes C-Class diesel, almost the same situation. I'm one of those with little experience, so I took it to my garage. It turned out that my DPF was heavily overcharged and that caused the whole problem. It cost me around 1325 euros to replace it. I can't tell you exactly what's wrong with your AMG GT without knowing more details. Can you please tell me more about the behavior of your car, such as if the engine running out of balance is constant or if it only happens when accelerating? It might also be helpful to know how many kilometers you have already driven. This could help to narrow down the problem a little more precisely.

Hey, thanks for your reply. My AMG GT now has 101431 km on the clock. What I forgot to mention is that the engine noise is weird, and it only seems to run rough when I accelerate. At constant speed it's okay. Would appreciate if you or anyone else here could give any more clues. Thanks again!

Hi, thanks for the additional information. My C-Class is a diesel, but I think your problem could be similar. In my case, it was actually the case that the DPF can become clogged with high mileage and lack of maintenance, which leads to the symptoms you describe. Nevertheless, think again about the exhaust back pressure sensor. This thing measures the pressure in the exhaust system to determine whether the DPF is clogged or not. If the sensor is faulty, the car might think the DPF is clogged, even if it isn't, and try to clean it constantly. This could send too much unburned fuel into the exhaust pipe, and that could cause the black smoke you see. But to be on the safe side, I would recommend you get a proper diagnosis done at a garage. There might even be a software update for your car that could solve the problem. This usually costs less than replacing parts. Stay tuned and let us know how it goes! I'll keep my fingers crossed that it won't be too expensive.

Thank you very much for your detailed advice. I think I'll follow your advice and make an appointment at the workshop. The idea with the exhaust back pressure sensor sounds logical and I will also mention the software update. That would be really great if it really was just that and no part replacement was necessary. Thanks again for your help and good wishes, I'll keep you posted!

Hi Thomas, it sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue. The symptoms you're describing could be related to a number of things, but given that you've already replaced the exhaust back pressure sensor, it might be worth checking the turbocharger. The whistling sound and the car going into emergency mode could be signs of a failing turbo. However, this is just a guess and it's important to get a proper diagnosis. I would recommend taking your car to a professional mechanic for a thorough inspection. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions or is there anything else you've noticed that might help us understand the problem better?
