Problems with A4 Audi (2008, diesel): Black smoke and increased fuel consumption

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Hello everyone, I have recently started having problems with my A4 Audi (built in 2008, diesel). When accelerating, it shows black smoke, the engine light is on, it sometimes just goes out and the engine doesn't run smoothly, I also have increased fuel consumption and it jerks when accelerating. I think it may be due to the functional restriction of the fuel injection. Has anyone ever had similar experiences and can give me tips on what was done in the workshop to solve the problem? Thank you for your support!

Hi, I recently had exactly the same problem with my A6 Audi (built in 2010, diesel). I took it to my local garage and the engine control unit was faulty. The repair cost me 1000 euros. Maybe you need to have that checked too. Has your car ever been read out? Are there any error codes there? That could go into more detail and help. I hope I've been able to help you a little!

Hi, thanks for your reply! My A4 has not yet been read out, so I should probably have that done as soon as possible. The engine control unit could really be a problem, although I hope that the repair won't be that expensive. Did the repair on your A6 completely solve the problem? Are there any other things I should have checked at the garage? Thanks again for your help!

Hi there, I had similar symptoms with my A4 diesel (built in 2007). Black smoke, jerking when accelerating, engine light and high fuel consumption - I know the whole story. I can certainly help in your case. Because I thought the same as you, I had the injection checked. It turned out that the injection nozzles were actually clogged. The workshop cleaned the injectors and also had to update the engine control unit. After that, the problem was solved! So, I would definitely suggest testing the function of the injection first. It's usually cheaper than buying a new engine control unit straight away. And if the control unit is defective, you can also get a repaired one for half the price. Hope I was able to help you, buddy. Have a safe journey!

Hi, thanks for your advice! It's good to know that the symptoms on your A4 were similar and it was actually the injectors. I will definitely visit a garage and ask them to check the injection before jumping to conclusions and replacing the engine control unit. I didn't know about the engine control unit update, thanks for that. Thanks also for the tip about the repaired control units. I hope it can be solved that easily for me too. I really appreciate your advice, thanks again!
