Problems with a rough engine and high fuel consumption with Renault VelSatis 2003 - Possible cause camshaft phasing?

Check engine light on

Weird engine noise

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Valve adjustment noise

Hey guys, my 2003 Renault VelSatis with a gasoline engine is having a few problems. The car loses power, the engine runs unevenly, jerks when accelerating and makes strange noises, plus the fuel consumption is high and the engine light is on. Could this possibly be due to the camshaft adjustment? Has anyone had any experience of this and can tell me how they solved it in the workshop? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2005 Renault Scenic. I'm not really a mechanic, I just have a bit of experience, so I'd say I'm a layman. My car's engine was running just as rough as yours, especially when accelerating, and the check engine light was also on. I took it to my garage and they found that the valve mechanism was broken in/defective. The repair and replacement cost me €405. It could be that your problem can be solved in exactly the same way. But to be sure, could you please give me more information about your vehicle? For example, mileage, when you last changed the oil or whether you've had similar problems before? The more information I have, the better I can help you.

Hello, my VelSatis now has 108841 km on the clock. The last service was about 6 months ago. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. Your experience report with the valve mechanism sounds logical, thanks for the tip! I'll pass this on to my garage and hopefully they'll find the solution. I'll get back to you when the problem has been solved.

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience with us. I am firmly convinced that the logic of it all will be found in a garage. The kilometers and the last service date sound reasonable. It is common for both the camshaft adjustment and the valve mechanics to cause problems, but more after higher mileages. But don't worry, such repairs are no big deal for a workshop, they know their way around! I hope you don't have any more problems soon. Be sure to give us an update if you have any news. Good luck and keep driving!

Hey, I've been told that garages are familiar with such problems, but it gives you a bit of reassurance that you're not alone with such problems. Your advice is worth its weight in gold. Hopefully everything will work out now. I will definitely keep you up to date, thanks again for the tips. See you then and have a safe journey!
