Problems with 2018 Toyota Avensis: Engine indicator light, loss of power and metal shavings in the oil

Car won't start

Loss of engine power

Weird engine noise

Metal shavings in oil

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Engine shuts off by itself

Hi guys, my 2018 Toyota Avensis has problems from time to time. The check engine light comes on, the engine stalls on its own, it loses power, runs rough, sometimes won't start and makes weird noises. And the other day I found metal shavings in the oil - nothing good, right? I have the feeling that the position of the crankshaft in relation to the camshaft is not right. Do any of you have experience with this sort of thing? How did you solve the problem in your workshop? I would appreciate any tips and experiences! Thanks in advance.

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2016 Toyota Corolla. I have a bit of experience with cars, so I took the car to my garage. They said the timing chain was elongated. It's quite an expensive repair, cost me around 1320 euros. It sounds like your problem might be similar. Have you done an OBD scan? Do you know if there are any fault codes? This information could help to better understand the problem.

Hey, thanks for the tip! I haven't done an OBD scan yet, but I will definitely do that next. My car now has 112793 KM on the clock, the last service was a few months ago. I just hope it's not a lengthened timing chain, that sounds like a really expensive issue. I'll let you know as soon as I have more information.

Hello again! Yes, that really sounds like a good plan. Definitely do the OBD scan. Sometimes there are other things that can cause symptoms like this, such as a faulty mass airflow sensor or a faulty crankshaft sensor. And it's definitely a good idea to keep the service thing in mind - sometimes even simple things like an overdue oil change can cause problems like this. I hope it's something minor in your case too! Keep us posted, fingers crossed it's nothing serious!

Hi guys, many thanks for the support. The idea with the OBD scan is really good, I will do that first. The mass air flow sensor or the crankshaft sensor could actually be the culprit. I'll find out more and really hope it's nothing serious. I didn't realize that even simple things like an overdue oil change could have such an effect. I'll keep you up to date and thank you again for the valuable tips. You guys are great!
