Problems with 2009 BMW X5 petrol engine: black smoke, engine failure and high fuel consumption

Strong exhaust smell

Engine shuts off by itself

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Hi guys, I have a problem with my 2009 BMW X5 gasoline engine. When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the check engine light is on and the engine suddenly stops. I also notice a loss of power and the engine runs unevenly. It jerks when accelerating, fuel consumption is high, the exhaust smells strongly and it dies when idling. I suspect that the fuel level sensor is not working properly. Does anyone have experience with this problem and can give me tips on how to fix it? How have your garages solved this problem and what were your experiences? I am grateful for any tips!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2007 BMW X3. I admit I'm not a car expert, I just have some experience with cars. With mine, it was actually the wiring harness/plug that was faulty. They replaced it for me at the garage. It cost me just under 95 euros at the time. Can you give me a few more details about your car? For example, when was the last time you had it serviced? And is there any specific situation when the engine stalls? This information could help to better understand the problem.

Hey, thanks for your advice. I last had my X5 serviced at 213400 km, after that there were actually no problems. But it seems that it mostly happens when the car is already warmed up and then I want to drive uphill. Then it starts to jerk and simply stalls. I could check the wiring harness/plug, thanks for the tip!

Hey, no problem, that's what we're here for! I had the same symptom when my X3 was warmed up. Maybe it really is the same problem. If it's the wiring harness/plug, a repair or replacement at the garage should fix it. If the problem still persists, it could be that another part is faulty. If the car jerks and stalls, especially when driving uphill, it could also be a problem with the ignition coil, fuel system or catalytic converter. Perhaps you should also have the LMM (mass air flow sensor) checked. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Hi everyone, I really appreciate the advice and sharing your experiences. I will have the wiring harness and connector checked, as well as ask for the LMM to be checked. I will also have the other parts you mentioned looked at more closely. I hope the problem will be solved soon. I'll get back to you as soon as I find a solution. Thanks again for the support, it means a lot to me! It's great to have such a community where we can help each other. See you soon!
