In that case, you usually at least get a ticking sound, or the car starts briefly and then goes straight off again. However, it was similar with my Golf at the time, where it was due to the starter motor, which was defective. The starter motor turns the engine and enables the car to start. If the starter motor is faulty, nothing happens when you turn the ignition key, just as you described. So I would recommend that you have the starter checked. Hopefully it's nothing too expensive.
