Problem with the headlight height adjustment and warning light in the BMW 2 Series Diesel (2015)

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Headlamp leveller malfunction

Hi, I have a strange problem with my BMW 2 series diesel (built in 2015). The headlight leveling system is acting up and a warning light in the speedometer comes on. I think it might have something to do with the headlight leveling, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any experience with this and can give me some tips? How was the problem solved in the workshop and what were your experiences? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have experienced something similar on my BMW 3 series (2013 model year). Before I go into it, I should say that I have limited auto tech experience, so please take my advice with a grain of salt. Back to my experience. The warning light in my speedo also came on and we found that the cable connection to the headlight was faulty. It was a tricky job but my technician sorted it out. It cost me about 180 euros. To give you a better solution, could you please tell me the exact symptoms and the car model exactly? It would be helpful to have more details. All the best!

Hello, thank you for your reply! It's good to know that it could be a similar problem. My model is a 2015 BMW 2 Series diesel and the symptoms are rather unspecific. The headlights seem to jump up and down and the warning light comes on constantly. Both in daylight and in the dark. In addition, the headlights sometimes work normally and sometimes not. Recently had a service with a mileage of 57298 km. I would be very grateful for any further advice!

Man, that sounds terribly unsafe, especially when driving at night, I understand your concerns. It was similar on my 2013 BMW 3 series, and it seems like we had a pretty similar problem. In my case, it was a fault with the sensor strip for the headlight leveling system. This is located low in the front axle, and the ECU was unable to determine correct data transmission. As a result, the height adjustment of the headlights jumped up and down. All cable connections, especially those to the headlights, should be checked. In my case this was the cause of the problem, a simple cable break but can lead to all sorts of mayhem. It looks like your BMW may have the same problem, but it could also be something more serious. I would strongly advise you to take it to a garage to have it checked, it could be something that can only be solved by direct examination and repair. I hope this helps you a little. If you have any other questions, keep them coming! Strong nerves and good luck!

Hello, thank you very much for your detailed answer! That sounds quite plausible with the sensor strip and the control unit. Yes, I'm afraid it seems best to take the car to a garage to have it checked. With something as important as the headlights, you don't want to take any risks. Your tips were very helpful and I really appreciate your time and effort! I will update here again what the problem was in the end. Until then, thanks again and all the best!

The issue could be as simple as a burnt-out bulb. Start by checking the bulb and if it's burnt out, replace it. If the bulb is fine, then the problem could be a faulty daytime running light module or a wiring issue. In either case, it would be best to have a professional mechanic inspect it to avoid any electrical mishaps.

Hi just now an error light came on on the dial of my 2016 x1 and it says headlight height adjustment failed how can I reset the error and fix the problem? The front headlights seem to be working normally, to premise that last week it was in the workshop forula classic overhaul I would not want them to have done something on the headlights . Thank you all I await your reply.Regards

The error message you're seeing could be due to a malfunction in the headlight leveling system. This could be caused by a variety of issues, such as a faulty sensor, a problem with the wiring, or an issue with the control module. I would recommend starting by checking the wiring and connections to the headlights and sensors. If everything looks good there, you may need to have the system diagnosed by a professional. Please keep us updated on your progress.
