Problem with sporadic shifting and warning light in Mercedes Viano Diesel 2007: Experience and suggested solutions wanted

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hi folks, I have a problem with my Mercedes Viano Diesel, built in 2007. The gearshift jumps sporadically and despite the warning light in the speedometer I can't get any further. I suspect that it could be the automatic transmission parking position switch. Has anyone had similar experiences and can give me tips on troubleshooting? I am particularly interested in what was done in the workshop to rectify the problem. Thanks in advance!

Hey, my 2005 Mercedes Sprinter Diesel had a similar problem. I have about the same experience with cars, so I'm no expert, but I know a bit about it. At the garage they told me that the transmission control unit was faulty. The repair cost me around 1000 euros. Without more information about your vehicle, I might be able to help. What error messages are appearing? And how exactly does the vehicle behave when the warning light appears?

Hi, thanks for the tip about the transmission control unit, I'll have it checked. At the last service (at 187498 km) there was no particular error message. It feels like the car can't shift into gear properly when the warning light is on. Does not drive satisfactorily, somehow unsafe. It's difficult to describe. I'll probably have to take it to the garage and have it checked.

That's right, Moin, you remind me of my old story. When the warning light came on in my Sprinter, it felt similar. There were times when the gears just wouldn't engage. I can imagine how unsafe that can feel, especially when you're on the highway! It's possible that your Viano has a similar transmission problem to the one my Sprinter had. If the transmission control unit is faulty, that could cause the symptoms you describe. A visit to the garage would be my next recommendation. It might also be helpful to read out the fault memory. Perhaps the technician at the workshop can then better determine what the problem is. But a remote diagnosis is of course only possible to a limited extent. And if it really is the transmission control unit, the costs could be similar to what I had to pay at the time. Let's just hope it's nothing more serious. Good luck with it and keep us up to date on how it goes!

Hey, thanks for the recommendations and for sharing your experiences. This has helped me a lot. I will go to the garage and have the fault memory read out to narrow down the problem further. I will also have the transmission control unit checked. Of course I hope it's nothing more serious, but I will prepare myself for possible costs. I'll let you know as soon as I have more information. Thanks again and see you then!
