I had exactly the same symptom back then: engine indicator light on, increased fuel consumption and smelly exhaust. The garage found that the electric changeover valve was defective. I paid around 140 euros for it, but after that everything ran like clockwork again. Of course, it's not 100% certain that it's the same for you, but the symptoms fit pretty well.
