Possible Valvetronic system malfunction in BMW 3 Series (2001) - symptoms and experiences

Unsteady engine

Weird engine noise

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Metal shavings in oil

Valve adjustment noise

Hello everyone, I'm a bit worried about my 2001 BMW 3 Series with a gasoline engine and 123469 km on the clock. The check engine light is on, I have a loss of engine power, the engine is running rough, the car jerks when accelerating and the fuel consumption has increased. I also hear a strange engine noise and there were noises when adjusting the valves. During my last oil change, I even discovered metal shavings in the oil. Do I suspect a problem with the Valvetronic system? Unfortunately, I had a negative experience during my last visit to the garage and would therefore like to ask about your experiences here. Have any of you ever had similar problems and how did you proceed? Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Hi, I had similar problems with my 2004 BMW 5 Series. I also had the check engine light on, the car was running rough and there was jerking when accelerating. At the last workshop visit, they found that the camshaft and the Valvetronic system had to be replaced. This was not good news, as it was a serious defect that could have caused serious damage. Fortunately, we caught it early and repaired it. Hope this helps you. All the best

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! Oh dear, that really sounds like an extensive repair... Do you remember how much you left at the garage? And did you have any other problems afterwards or was everything okay with the repair? Looking forward to your answer

Hi, yes, it really was a lot of work. But since the visit to the mechanic, I've got rid of the fault in the Valvetronic system. In the end, it cost me €455 to repair the Valvetronic servomotor. Since then, everything has been running smoothly again, so the investment was definitely worth it! Until then

Well then, thank you very much for the information! So it seems that it's worth tackling the whole thing. I think I'll take the car to the mechanic after all and hope that it runs as well as you did. See you then and thanks again for your help

Hi, I have the following error code 002A6F DME: Valvetronic, minimum stroke exceeded minimum stroke adaptation stop several times, at the same time the engine sounds a little louder and the exhaust smells slightly burnt. Does anyone know about this problem and can help me what it could be? Many thanks in advance

The error code you're seeing is related to the Valvetronic system in your car, which controls the amount of air being let into the engine. This system can fail due to wear and tear or due to a software issue. The louder engine noise and burnt smell from the exhaust could be symptoms of this. I would recommend starting with a software update for your car's Engine Control Unit (ECU) as this can sometimes resolve the issue. If the problem persists, it's likely a mechanical issue with the Valvetronic system and you should have it inspected by a professional mechanic. Please keep us updated on your progress and let us know if you have any further questions.
