Possible malfunction of the camshaft sensor in Renault Kadjar - experience and solutions wanted

Loss of engine power

Car won't start

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Engine shuts off by itself

Longer cold start time

Hi guys, I have a strange problem with my Renault Kadjar (petrol, year of manufacture 2018). The check engine light is on, the engine sometimes just turns off, cold starts take longer, I have a loss of power and the engine runs rough. Sometimes the car won't start at all. Could this be a malfunction of the camshaft sensor? Do any of you have experience with this and can give me some troubleshooting tips? How did you get the problem solved at your garage and what were your experiences? I appreciate any advice! Thank you!

Hello, I once had a similar problem with my Renault Captur (gasoline, built in 2016). It's actually the same model as your Kadjar, just a bit older. I wouldn't call myself a car expert, I only have limited experience with cars. My car also had the problems with the check engine light and starting. The garage then discovered that the sensor wheel on the camshafts was defective. The repair cost me 695 euros, but after that the car ran perfectly again. Have you already read out your car's fault memory? That could give you more information. I had a good experience at the garage, they explained everything to me in detail and the costs were also ok. What symptoms does your car show exactly?

Hi, thanks for your reply! I haven't read the fault memory yet, that's definitely the next step I'll take. My car now has 83520 km down and has recently had its service, but couldn't find anything obvious... With the symptoms I described earlier, as I said it sometimes won't start at all and generally runs rough. I hope this helps, otherwise please let me know. Companies like yours definitely seem to be worth my money. Thank you!

Hello again! No problem, I'm happy to pass on my experience. And exactly, reading out the fault memory would be a good next step. It helped a lot with my symptoms back then. Sometimes a small malfunction, as was the case for me with the encoder wheel on the camshafts, can trigger such problems. The symptoms you describe could also indicate a defective camshaft sensor. In particular, the hesitation when starting, the loss of power and the uneven engine running could indicate this. If the sensor is not working properly, this can lead to misfiring, loss of power and fluctuations in engine performance. I would recommend that you have this checked out by a workshop. It is often small defects that cause such symptoms and the repair can be uncomplicated and not as expensive as you might think. In the case of my car, the overall costs were also okay and everything has been running smoothly again since the repair. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's the same for you! Please keep us up to date on how things turn out for you. Good luck!

Hello, thank you very much for your detailed reply and well-intentioned advice! It really does sound like it could be that. I think the next step is indeed to read the fault memory and then take the car to the garage to investigate the problem further. It's reassuring to hear that both you and others have had good experiences with garages and that the repair costs don't always have to be exorbitant... I'm thinking of asking the garage for a detailed quote before I decide to go ahead with the repair. I'll definitely keep you posted on what comes of it and thank you again for your help!
