Porsche 997's Multiple Issues Point to Camshaft Crisis

Unsteady engine

Hey everyone, having some serious trouble with my 2008 Porsche 997. The car's showing multiple symptoms: check engine light, power loss, rough running, starting issues, jerking during acceleration, and stalling at idle. I suspect it might be the camshaft sensor, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with similar issues. Has anyone experienced this combination of problems? What did it turn out to be and how was it fixed? Really interested in hearing about your repair experiences and workshop solutions.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2010 Porsche Cayman (I'd say I have some experience with Porsches). Those symptoms sound very familiar, my car was doing almost exactly the same thing last year. Turned out to be a faulty camshaft position sensor, just as you suspect. I took it to my trusted workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The repair, including parts and labor, set me back about 695€, but it fixed all those symptoms completely. The car's been running perfectly since then. Can you share more details about your car, like the engine type and mileage? This might help narrow down if we're dealing with the same issue. These sensors can be a common problem on certain engine variants. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need any other info about my repair experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My 997 has done 15210 KM since my latest service and yeah, those symptoms you described match exactly what I'm experiencing. Really good to hear it was just the camshaft sensor in your case, that's way better than what I was fearing it might be! The price seems reasonable too. Did you notice any warning signs before it completely acted up? Just wondering if I could've caught this earlier. Going to book it in with my mechanic next week. Fingers crossed it's the same straightforward fix!

Hey again! Thanks for asking about the warning signs. Actually, looking back now, there were some subtle hints before it got really bad on my Cayman. About 2-3 weeks before the full-blown issues, I noticed the car would occasionally hesitate for a split second when accelerating from a stop. It was so minor at first that I almost convinced myself I was imagining it! Then it gradually got worse, you know how it goes. The check engine light started flickering on and off before it stayed on permanently. The real wake-up call was one morning when the car really struggled to start, and that's when all those other symptoms hit at once. Since you're at 15210 KM since your last service, it's actually pretty similar to when mine started acting up (I was around 16000 KM post-service). One thing I learned from this, these sensors don't usually fail suddenly. They kind of deteriorate over time. Quick tip: when you take it to your mechanic, ask them to check the wiring harness too. In my case, they found some minor corrosion on the connector, so they cleaned that up while they were at it. Might save you from future headaches! Let me know how it goes with your 997!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's super helpful info about the warning signs. Now that you mention it, I did notice some slight hesitation a few weeks back but didn't think much of it at the time. Definitely going to pay more attention to those subtle changes in the future! Really appreciate the tip about checking the wiring harness too, I'll make sure to mention that to my mechanic. It's actually quite reassuring to hear that your situation was so similar to mine, both in terms of symptoms and mileage. I'll update this thread once I get it sorted next week. Thanks again for all your help, you've definitely made me feel a lot better about this whole situation!

Let our mechanics help you!
