Porsche 996 Headlight Washer Mystery: Signal Error Found

Headlight cleaning system without function

Hey everyone, having an issue with my 2006 Porsche 996. The headlight cleaning system stopped working completely, and I suspect it might be related to a rear window wiper fluid pump signal error. Has anyone encountered this problem? I'd really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what your mechanic found to be the root cause. Looking for some guidance before heading to the shop.

Hey there! I had some experience with a similar issue on my 2004 Porsche 911 (and I've also owned a Cayman). I'd say I have some experience working with cars, but I'm no expert. Last year, my headlight washer system also quit working. Took it to my trusted mechanic, and it turned out to be a faulty pump relay connection. The fix cost me about 165 Euro, and it's been working perfectly since then. What's your car's mileage and have you noticed any other electrical issues? Also, does your washer fluid warning light come on? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My 996 is at 134949 KM, and I just had my service done last month. Actually, I haven't noticed any other electrical issues, and weirdly enough, the washer fluid warning light hasn't come on at all. That's interesting about the pump relay connection, definitely cheaper than what I was expecting! I might check that first before diving into anything more complex. Did your mechanic mention any other common causes for this issue?

Hey again! Yeah, when I took my 911 to the mechanic for that pump relay issue, he actually mentioned a few other common causes too. In my case, even though the relay was the culprit, he said he often sees issues with the actual washer jets getting clogged with debris or mineral deposits (especially here in Europe with our hard water). Given that your mileage is pretty similar to what mine was when I had the problem (mine was around 140k km), and you're not seeing any warning lights either, it really does sound similar to what I experienced. One thing my mechanic pointed out that might be worth checking, sometimes the washer fluid level sensor can act up without triggering the warning light. I know it sounds weird, but it happened to me once before the relay issue. Quick question, have you tried listening for the pump when you activate the headlight washers? When mine was failing, it made this weird clicking sound before it completely gave up. Might help narrow down if it's a relay issue like mine was. Just want to help you avoid unnecessary repairs since I've been down this road before with my 911. Let me know what you find out!

Thanks a lot for the detailed follow-up! Actually, now that you mention it, I did hear a faint clicking sound last week before it completely stopped working. I'll definitely pay attention to that when I check it next. The clogged jets thing makes sense too, we've got pretty hard water in my area as well. I'm feeling much more confident about heading to the mechanic now, armed with all this info. I'll start by having them check the relay and the jets, since those seem like the most likely culprits based on your experience. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all these details, it's super helpful to hear from someone who's dealt with the same issue. I'll update the thread once I get it sorted out!
