Porsche 991 Headlight Mystery: Dim Beams & Flicker Issues

Low beam and high beam seems too high or too low

Dim or flickering lights

Hey everyone, having some headlight issues with my 2016 Porsche 991. Both low and high beams are misaligned, and I'm noticing they flicker and appear dim at times. I suspect it might be related to the indicator system. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? Really interested in hearing what the actual problem turned out to be and how your mechanic fixed it. Any repair experiences or tips would be super helpful.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 Porsche Cayman (I've got some experience working on cars but nothing too advanced). It turned out to be a faulty lamp control module that was causing those exact symptoms, flickering, dimming, and misalignment. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. Cost me about 102.50€ to get it sorted, including the new part and labor. What's the mileage on your 991? Also, have you noticed any warning lights on the dash? These details would help me share more specific info about what you might be dealing with.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My 991 has 74114 KM on the clock, and I haven't noticed any warning lights on the dash yet. Just had my latest service done about two months ago. The flickering seems pretty similar to what you described with your Cayman. That's actually really helpful to know about the lamp control module, seems like a reasonable fix too, price-wise. Did you notice if the problem got worse over time before you got it fixed?

Hey again! Yeah, with my Cayman, the problem definitely got worse gradually. When I first noticed it, the flickering was pretty subtle and would only happen occasionally, especially when I was idling. But over about 2-3 weeks, it became more noticeable and frequent, pretty much like what you're describing with your 991. Since your mileage is pretty similar to what mine was when I had the issue (mine was around 78000 KM), and you're not seeing any warning lights either, it's sounding more and more like the same problem. The fact that it's happening so soon after your service is actually interesting, sometimes these modules can start acting up after routine maintenance, though it's probably just coincidence in your case. One thing I forgot to mention in my first reply, before I got it fixed, I noticed the problem was worse during cold starts in the morning. Did you notice anything like that? The workshop explained that the temperature changes can make the symptoms more obvious when there's a failing lamp control module. Just so you know, after they replaced the module, I haven't had a single issue with the lights for over a year now. Definitely worth getting it checked out sooner rather than later!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! Come to think of it, I have actually noticed it being worse during cold starts, I just didn't connect the dots until you mentioned it. It's really reassuring to hear that the fix has lasted over a year for you. Given how similar our situations sound, I'm going to book it in at my local Porsche workshop tomorrow morning. Really don't want to risk it getting worse, especially with winter coming up. I'll definitely update this thread once I get it sorted, in case anyone else runs into the same issue. Thanks again for all your help, it's saved me a lot of worry about what might be wrong!
