Peugeot 408 Diesel, year 2013 - Problems with check engine light and jerky gearbox

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Check engine light on

Hi guys, I have a Peugeot 408 Diesel, built in 2013 and it's been really strange to drive recently. Check Engine lights up and the gearbox jerks and jumps irregularly. My guess would be a fault with the selector lever. Have any of you ever had similar damage and know how it was fixed in the workshop? What experiences have you had? Thank you in advance for your tips.

Hey, I have a 2011 Peugeot 508 Diesel and had a similar problem to yours. In my case, the cable connection on the selector lever was damaged. I would classify my car knowledge as somewhere between none and a bit of experience, so I'm definitely not a professional. I was really well supported by my garage - we replaced the damaged cables and checked everything else to make sure there were no further problems. In the end, it cost me 365 euros. But do you happen to have any more information, like mileage and maybe other symptoms? I could help a bit more accurately if I had more details. But hopefully my experience will help you a little.

Thanks for your answer. My 408 has about 70960 KM on it. Another symptom is that the gears sometimes just don't change. It was last in the garage three months ago for an inspection, but everything else was fine. I'll take your experience into consideration and give the garage a call. Fingers crossed that it doesn't cost more than 365 euros!

Hey, no problem! At around 70,000 KM, problems like this can occur. The gears not changing could actually indicate a problem with the selector lever. But it could also be the automatic software. But make sure and have all possible causes checked, especially since your check engine is lit. Just to be on the safe side, otherwise it might be more expensive if it's something serious. Remember, sometimes the parts are cheap, but the labor can be expensive. Maybe you'll get lucky and it's just a minor issue. And while you're at it, ask about the condition of the gearbox oil. This normally needs to be changed every 60,000 - 120,000 KM. Hopefully it's nothing too serious. Fingers crossed!

Many thanks for your tips and explanations - really helpful! I've written down the key points and will address them the next time I visit the workshop. Bianca from the workshop is super nice and competent, so I hope we can solve the problem quickly. I'm a little relieved to be honest. I would have thought it was something more serious! But it's good to know that it might just be a problem with the gear selector. And I'll have another look at the gearbox oil. Have a nice day and thanks again!
