Peugeot 408 Diesel from 2011: Problems with black smoke, engine performance and possible rail pressure sensor defect

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

Poor fuel economy

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey guys, I have a strange problem with my 2011 Peugeot 408 diesel that just won't behave normally. When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the engine light comes on, the engine shuts off by itself, the engine power is reduced, the engine runs rough, there are jerks when accelerating, the fuel consumption is high, the exhaust smells strongly and it stalls when idling. I think it might be the rail pressure sensor. Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me some tips? How did you get the problem solved in the workshop? I would appreciate any tips or experience reports that help me to narrow down the problem and understand it better. Thank you in advance!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2009 Peugeot 406 diesel. It was indeed a fault with the pressure sensor. My car knowledge is poor but the problem was noticeable enough. I took my car to the garage and they found that the pressure sensor was faulty. I paid 240 euros for it. If you give me more details about your car, I might be able to help you. How many kilometers has the car done? Which garage did you consider? Were there any other fault codes in the fault memory apart from the display? The more information you provide, the better we can help together. All the best!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. My 408 already has 183502 km on the clock and the last inspection was about 6 months ago. I've always been to my regular garage, but I'm thinking about going to a specialist Peugeot garage this time. Unfortunately, I haven't read the fault memory, so I don't know if there are any other fault codes. Your faulty pressure sensor sounds a lot like my problem, thanks for the tip! Maybe I should just have it changed and see if it gets better. 240 euros is still reasonable. Thanks and see you later!

Hey, no problem, always happy to help! Yes, given the mileage of your car, the pressure sensor could well be the culprit. In my case, changing it definitely helped. A specialist Peugeot workshop could also be a good idea, as they are of course particularly familiar with this brand. In my case, the 240 euros included installation, so I would assume that it won't be much more expensive for you. Maybe have the fault memory read out, that could give you a more accurate picture of the situation. Keep me posted on how things progress for you. Keep your fingers crossed that it's just the sensor and nothing worse. Good luck and keep your head up!

Hello, thank you very much for your advice! That reassures me a little. I've made an appointment at the Peugeot garage and will definitely have the fault memory read out. I really hope it's just the pressure sensor. As soon as I know more, I'll let you know. Thanks for your sympathy and help! Have a nice day!
