Peugeot 307 petrol engine 2002: loss of power, increased fuel consumption and unusual engine noises

Weird engine noise

Poor fuel economy

Hey guys! I have a problem with my Peugeot 307 petrol engine, built in 2002, with a mileage of around 58,000 KM. My check engine light is on, the engine has lost a lot of power, no longer runs smoothly and jerks when accelerating. On top of that, the engine is consuming more fuel and making noises that sound like a valve adjustment, as well as making a strange engine noise. I suspect that it is due to the camshaft adjustment. Has anyone ever had something similar and can tell me what they experienced at the mechanic? I'd like to know what I need to be prepared for, as I've become a bit more cautious since my last visit. Thank you very much!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my Peugeot 308 from 2005. The camshaft phaser was also defective. It really is no walk in the park. If it's defective, it can have a huge impact on engine running. In my case, it meant that the valves could no longer open properly, which then led to a loss of power. The mechanic then had to completely replace the camshaft phaser. A real feat of strength, because the whole engine had to be taken apart. And that also took some time. But we don't want to talk about prices, so let's not. To summarize, yes, it was a serious problem that couldn't be solved easily. But after the repair, my car was running like a champ again. Good luck, hopefully it won't be too bad for you! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. It does sound like quite a feat, what a shame! Can you remember how much you paid for the repair? I'd like to know what I need to be prepared for financially. I would also like to know if you had any more problems after the repair or if everything has been going well since then? Thank you again! Best regards!

Hey, sure, I still remember the cost. The repair really hit my pocket, to be honest. I spent around €1260 to repair the camshaft phaser. But don't let that make you nervous, my car really did run better afterwards. Since I went to the mechanic and fixed the fault with the camshaft phaser, everything was back to normal. No more problems with it. So, yes, it's a lot of money, but after that you'll have peace of mind. I hope this helps you. Keep your fingers crossed that it goes as smoothly for you too! Best regards!

Hey, your answer helps me a lot, thanks for that! I'll be prepared for a hefty bill. But if the car runs like new again afterwards, then it's probably worth the investment. Good to hear that you didn't have any further problems afterwards. I hope it goes just as smoothly for me! Thanks again for your help and your experience. Best regards!
