Peugeot 1007 (2007) does not pull properly, jerks and produces black smoke - possible problems with lambda sensor?

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Hi guys, I need your help. My Peugeot 1007 (built in 2007, gasoline engine) no longer pulls properly and jerks when I accelerate. It also consumes more fuel than usual and shows the check engine light. In addition, black smoke comes out of the exhaust when accelerating and the engine runs unevenly. I suspect that the lambda sensor may have aged, but I would like your opinions and experiences on this. Have any of you ever had similar symptoms in your car and know how the garage fixed the problem? I would be grateful for any tips!

Hi, well I had a similar problem with my 2005 Peugeot 1005, I'm not a car expert but have some experience from other similar situations. The black smoke along with the other symptoms does indeed indicate that your lambda sensor could be dirty or clogged. It was exactly the same problem with my car. I had to take the car to the garage and they cleaned the ceramic inside the lambda sensor, which cost 375 euros. Could you perhaps give more details about your car? For example, how long have you had it, when was the last inspection, etc.? This could help me to better tailor my advice. Hope that helps!

Thank you for your quick reply. I have had the car for about 6 years and the current mileage is 141833 km. The last inspection was last year, so quite a long time ago. I will probably visit my garage and have the lambda sensor checked. Hopefully it won't be that expensive, but I fear the worst. I'll probably need a new catalytic converter too... Thanks again for your advice. You've helped me a lot!

No problem, always welcome! At your current mileage, it's actually not unusual for individual parts to give up the ghost or need cleaning. Last year's inspection was a while ago, but it's not a cause for concern as long as you don't completely skip the maintenance intervals. Remember, the lambda sensor is only one of many possible causes for the symptoms you mentioned. It could just as easily be a problem with the injection system, the spark plugs or the air filter, but your car definitely belongs in the workshop. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the costs won't be too high. Let us know what comes out! With my Peugeot it was actually the lambda sensor at the time, but that doesn't necessarily have to be the case with you. Hope this helps you and have a good trip!

Thank you for the detailed reply and the good wishes. Your information is very helpful and I will take it into account when I take the car to the garage. As soon as I have any news, I will let you know. See you then and thanks again!

I have a Peugeot 207, for the past 6 months my car has been struggling to idle when cold. It is misfiring and ends up just coming to a complete stop, only when it reaches temperature it will stop however if I drive off as soon as I start it I will put my foot down and nothing happens then all of a sudden it accelerates harshly. I’ve plugged in my obd reader and reeds a code to do with 02 sensor cuiruit bank 1 sensor 1. I’ve done research and has actually led to the ECU. I don’t deal with cars I’m a plant mechanic but would love to hear what advice is given.

Start by checking the condition of your spark plugs and ignition coils, as these can cause misfiring and poor idling when cold. If they are worn or damaged, replacing them might resolve the issue. Since you have an OBD code related to the O2 sensor, inspect the wiring and connections for any damage or corrosion. If the problem persists, it might be worth having a professional check the ECU and related components. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
