Panamera Diesel Spewing Black Smoke, EGR or Turbo Issue?

Loud hissing on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Whistling noise

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

Hey all, my 2019 Porsche Panamera Diesel (146K km) is giving me headaches lately. The engine's been acting up with black smoke, power loss, and weird noises, especially this hissing/whistling when I accelerate. Check engine light is also on, and I'm burning through fuel like crazy. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about going back. I'm suspecting it might be the boost pressure sensor, but wanted to hear if anyone's dealt with similar symptoms? Any recommendations for trusted mechanics who know their way around Panameras? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had very similar issues with my 2016 Porsche Cayenne Diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing are classic signs of a clogged DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), which was exactly what I dealt with. The black smoke, power loss, and that whistling sound during acceleration were spot-on the same. Took mine to the Porsche service center after my local mechanic couldn't properly diagnose it. They found that the DPF was about 85% clogged, and the back pressure was causing the turbo to struggle (hence the whistling). They had to do a forced regeneration first, but eventually, the DPF needed replacement as it was too far gone. It was quite a serious issue because a clogged DPF can lead to turbo failure if left untreated. Plus, the excessive fuel consumption you're experiencing is likely because your car's trying to self-clean the DPF through passive regeneration. For Panameras, I'd strongly suggest going to a certified Porsche center. These cars have complex emission systems that need proper diagnostic tools and expertise.

Thanks so much for sharing! Yeah, that sounds exactly like what I'm going through. It's good to know I'm not the only one who's dealt with this DPF nightmare. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole fix? And has everything been running smoothly since, or have you had any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Happy to help update you on my experience! After I took my Cayenne to the Porsche center, they not only fixed the clogged DPF (which set me back €1,325.00), but they also spotted and sorted out that boost pressure sensor issue I mentioned. Since getting it all fixed, my car's been running like a dream, no more black smoke, weird noises, or any of that nonsense! It was definitely worth every penny. The fuel consumption is back to normal, and the engine's got its power back. Honestly, it feels like I'm driving a different car now. The whistling sound that was driving me crazy? Completely gone! I totally get being worried about the cost, but trust me, leaving these issues unchecked would've been way more expensive in the long run. If you're still on the fence about getting it checked out, I'd say just bite the bullet and go for it. Better to fix it now than wait for more problems to stack up! Let me know how it goes if you decide to get it sorted. Always happy to share experiences with fellow Porsche owners!

Thanks for all the details! I actually just got back from the Porsche center today, and am I glad I took your advice! You were spot on about the DPF, mine was completely clogged up. Ended up costing me around €1,500 with some other minor fixes, but honestly, it was worth every cent. The difference is like night and day! No more black smoke coming out the back, and that annoying whistling sound is finally gone. The car's got its punch back too, and I'm not bleeding money on fuel anymore. Feels great to have my Panamera back to its old self. Can't believe I waited so long to get it checked out. Should've done this months ago instead of stressing about it. Lesson learned, when it comes to these cars, better to just go straight to the experts and get it done right. Thanks again for pushing me in the right direction! Really appreciate all the help!
