Panamera Diesel's Black Smoke & Power Loss Mystery

Hey everyone, having some serious trouble with my 2012 Porsche Panamera Diesel (81,707 km) and honestly feeling a bit nervous after a previous bad experience with a mechanic. The car's been acting up with heavy black smoke when I accelerate, severe power loss, and some nasty jerking. There's also this concerning hissing/whistling noise, plus the engine light is on. Car barely stays running at idle. Pretty sure it's boost pressure related, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms in their Panamera. Anyone have recommendations for a reliable mechanic who's good with these issues? What was your repair experience like and what did it cost? Thanks in advance!

I had very similar issues with my 2015 Porsche Cayenne Diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced, black smoke, power loss, and that distinct whistling noise. Turned out to be a faulty wastegate valve on the turbo. Took it to my local Porsche specialist, they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The wastegate wasn't regulating boost pressure properly, which was causing all those symptoms you mentioned. Mine was stuck partially open, leading to inconsistent boost and that terrible performance. The repair involved replacing the entire wastegate assembly. It's not a quick fix, they had to remove quite a bit to access everything, but it sorted all the issues completely. The car runs like new now. No more smoke, full power restored, and that annoying whistle is gone. It's definitely not something you want to leave unattended, could lead to more serious turbo damage if not fixed. I'd recommend getting it looked at ASAP by a proper Porsche specialist who knows these engines well.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That really sounds spot-on with what I'm dealing with. I'm relieved to hear you got it sorted out. Do you mind me asking how much you ended up paying for the wastegate replacement? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Trying to get a sense of what I might be in for with my Panamera. Thanks!

Hey there! Glad I can help follow up. Yeah, I got my Cayenne sorted out, it cost me exactly 860€ to fix the wastegate valve defect. Since seeing the mechanic, the Malfunction in the boost pressure system was completely fixed, and I couldn't be happier with how it's running now. It's been smooth sailing all the way, no more black smoke, weird noises, or power issues. The car feels just like it did when I first got it! I know these kinds of repairs can be nerve-wracking, but honestly, once you get it fixed, you'll feel the difference right away. My Cayenne's been running perfectly for months now, no other issues have popped up. Just make sure you get a proper Porsche specialist on it, they know what they're doing with these engines. Trust me, it's worth getting it sorted properly. The peace of mind alone is worth the investment. Let me know if you need any other info about the repair process!

Thanks so much for all the details! Just wanted to update everyone, I took my Panamera to a certified Porsche specialist yesterday, and you were right about the wastegate issue. Cost me about 900€, which wasn't as bad as I feared. The mechanic was super professional and got it done in two days. What a difference! The car's running like a dream now, no more black smoke, that annoying whistle is gone, and the power's back to normal. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed. Honestly, it was worth every penny just to have the car running properly again. Huge thanks to everyone who shared their experiences. Having your insights really helped me feel more confident about getting it repaired. For anyone else dealing with similar issues, don't wait around like I did initially. Getting it fixed by a proper specialist is definitely the way to go!
