Pajero AC Blower Problems, Control Panel Issue?

Blower does not work properly

Hey everyone, my 2001 Pajero diesel has an AC blower issue, it's not working properly. I suspect it might be the AC control panel acting up. Has anyone dealt with a similar problem? Would love to hear how your workshop diagnosed and fixed it, and what it ended up costing. Any heads up on common fixes would be really helpful. Thanks

Hey there! I had some experience with a similar issue on my 2003 Mitsubishi Montero (same family as your Pajero). I have some basic experience working with cars, but I usually leave the complex stuff to professionals. The symptoms were exactly like yours, the blower wasn't working right. Turned out to be a loose cable connection behind the control panel. Took it to my regular workshop, they diagnosed it pretty quickly and fixed the wiring connection. The whole thing cost me around 210€, including labor. Could you share more details about how exactly your blower is misbehaving? Does it work on some speeds but not others? Also, what's your mileage? This could help pinpoint if we're dealing with the same issue.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My car's at 143891 KM and had its last service about 3 months ago. The blower actually works on the highest setting only, nothing happens on 1-3. I was hoping it'd be something simple like your loose cable issue, but I'm starting to worry it might be the resistor. Guess I'll have to get it checked out at the workshop. Did your mechanic need to remove the whole dashboard to access the wiring?

Hey again! Yeah, reading about your blower only working on the highest setting, that's definitely different from what I experienced with my Montero. In my case, the blower was just cutting out unsual on all settings because of that loose connection. You know what? You're probably right about the resistor. That's actually a really common issue when the blower only works on high. When mine had the loose wire, the mechanic didn't need to take apart the whole dashboard, just removed the control panel itself to access the wiring behind it. But for a resistor replacement, they might need to go a bit deeper. Since you mentioned it, I actually know someone else with a Pajero who had the exact same symptoms as yours (working only on setting 4), and it turned out to be the blower resistor. Cost them about 150€ including labor, and took maybe an hour or so to fix. Way less painful than I initially thought it would be! Quick tip though, if you're going to get it fixed, might be worth having them check the blower motor while they're in there. These old Pajeros/Monteros can sometimes have multiple issues working together to cause problems. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out! Always curious to hear if it's the same issue or something different.

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! That's actually really reassuring to hear about your friend's Pajero, 150€ sounds way better than what I was worried it might cost. I'll definitely get it checked next week and ask them to look at the blower motor too while they're at it. Really appreciate you sharing those real-world costs and experiences, helps a lot with knowing what to expect. I'll update the thread once I get it sorted out, in case anyone else runs into the same issue with their Pajero. Just hope my local workshop can get it done as quickly as your friend's did. Having no proper AC control in this weather isn't fun! Thanks again for all the help!
