Overheating Issues in '08 Volvo S80 with Suspected Cooling Air Flap System Failure

Overheating

Hey all, I'm wracking my brain here with a problem in my '08 Volvo S80 (gasoline engine) which, by the way, only has 13441 KM on the clock! After my last not-so-fantastic visit to the mechanic, she’s been constantly overheating. I'm suspecting some issues with the cooling air flap system. Anyone here had a similar situation? What did your mechanic do about it and how was your overall experience? Would really appreciate any insights!

Hey there, I ran into a similar issue with my '11 Volvo V60 a while ago. It had to do with the radiator shutter wiring harness that was worn out and messed up behind the bumper. The similar symptoms were there, especially that pesky overheating. The mechanic checked all the cooling system's usual suspects, but in the end, it all boiled down to that darn wiring harness. Was it a serious issue? Well, yes and no. It wasn't like the engine was ready to blow, but it certainly was troublesome and it needed immediate attention. Ignoring it would have undoubtedly led to some costly repairs down the line. Overall, I'd say the experience was quite a learning curve. It's definitely worth having your mechanic look into the wiring harness - even if it turns out to be something else, at least you can rule that possibility out. Good luck with your S80!

Hey! Just chiming in real quick - your situation sounds a whole lot like what happened with my S80. Had to deal with some overheating, and it turned out to be the wiring harness just like what mentioned. If you don't mind me asking,, how much of a dent did the repair put in your wallet? Also, since the repair, did you notice anything else strange happening or was it all good from there on out? Just curious as I've got my own Volvo to worry about!

Hey there, To answer your question, if I remember well, the cost for the repair work was around 270€. The worn-out radiator shutter wiring harness hiding behind the bumper had to be fixed. Wasn’t a small expense, but then again, I reckon ignoring the issue would have burnt an even bigger hole in my pocket. Regarding your second question, it's been smooth sailing since the repair - the persisting problem of overheating vanished. The cooling air flap system, which we were suspecting initially, was not misbehaving anymore after the mechanic's intervention. So the repair work was indeed successful! I hope that’s helpful for you and your Volvo doesn’t give you too much of a headache. Good luck with it!

Hey, thanks a lot for sharing your experiences, folks. I was thinking I'd have to shell out a fortune for repairs, but around 270€ doesn't seem too bad if it resolves the overheating issue. So, it sounds like the killer culprit could be that hidden radiator shutter wiring harness causing all sorts of drama. I'll definitely bring this up with my mechanic. Fingers crossed it's the same thing and not anything more serious. Really appreciate the insights. I'll drop another update once I find out more. Also, hoping your Volvo problems stay at bay,! Seems like it's always something with these cars, huh? Anyways, thanks again, everyone. Cheers!
