Overheating Issue and Check Engine Light in 2014 Lexus GX: Potential Faulty Coolant Temperature Sensor

Check engine light on

Overheating

Hey! I've got this 2014 Lexus GX with a Gasoline engine and a fair bit of mileage (around 149982 KM) under its belt. She's been overheating a lot recently, and the Check engine light just came on. Had a pretty rough experience with a mechanic last time, so got a hunch it might be a faulty Coolant temperature sensor. Anyone else had something similar messing up their ride? Would love to hear about your diagnosis and repair journey. Any input would be appreciated!

Hey, dealt with something pretty similar to this on my 2011 Lexus IS not too long ago. Turned out, it was indeed the Coolant temperature sensor that was causing the overheating. Had some cable connection issues along with a plug defect thrown into the mix. Now, the whole thing wasn't a walk in the park, but thankfully it wasn’t anything too serious. Just a bit of a nuisance, really. The mechanic had to sort out the connection and replaced the sensor too. The issue was the electrical connection to the sensor was corroded. Defective plug was causing sporadic temperature readings, which was messing with the engine management system. Hence, the Check engine light came on. Post the fixing of the connections and the sensor, the ride has been smooth as silk. The engine is staying cool and the Check engine light has stayed off. Hope this helps! Always good to get a second opinion. And don't worry, you might just have the same simple issue as mine. She'll be back to her old self in no time!

Hey, your story really feels familiar, definitely gave me a bit more peace of mind! Glad to hear your Lexus is running smoothly now. Being curious though, you remember how much you had to pull out of your pocket for the repair? Also, has anything else cropped up since, or has it been smooth sailing? Appreciate your help!

Hey again! Yeah, it wasn't too harsh on my pocket. The repairs set me back by just about 95€. That covered sorting the defective cable connection and plug, hand in hand. Always stings a bit to pay up, but hey, rather this than a huge bill! Since then, I've been cruising without any problems. And guess what - the Coolant temperature sensor issue? Totally sorted. No overheating, no weird engine light antics since seeing the mechanic. In fact, my old girl's been purring like a kitten! So don't sweat it, your Lexy should be back on track in no time!

Thanks a million. Seriously, that's a huge relief to hear. A decent repair bill is always less of a pain when compared to getting a new ride! Getting the sensor and plug issue sorted and cruising with no overheating or annoying engine light warnings sounds like a dream. Taking her to the mechanic first thing tomorrow with hopes of a smooth repair journey. Fingers crossed my old gal will be purring like a kitten soon as well! Cheers for the help and reassurances!
