Overheating and check engine light on Peugeot RCZ Diesel 2012: Self-help tips and workshop recommendations wanted

Check engine light on

|

Overheating

Hey guys, I'm worried about my 2012 Peugeot RCZ diesel with a whopping 72,209 km on the odometer. The thing keeps overheating and the check engine light won't go out. I have a hunch that the coolant thermostat is acting up... Has anyone ever had similar problems and can give me a tip? The last time I went to a mechanic I was completely fooled, so I'd like to know if you know a good garage or if I can maybe even fix the problem myself? Any advice would be appreciated!

Hey, I had similar symptoms on my 2015 Peugeot 308, in my case it was actually the wiring harness damage that was causing this trouble. I'm not a car mechanic, but when I took it to the garage they had to check everything from the spark plugs to the ignition coils and they also checked the coolant thermostat. They said the damage was quite serious because it affects the engine's control system and it was necessary to replace the whole wiring harness. I think it would be a good idea if you have your coolant thermostat checked as well as the wiring system. You might be able to fix it yourself if you're handy, but if the wiring harness is damaged, I'd suggest you leave it to a specialist garage. The guys at my garage did a really good job. Maybe you can find one that can help you too. I hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for your tip! It's a really bad story with the wiring harness... Do you remember how deep you had to dig into your pocket for the repair? And have you had any other problems with the box since then?

Hey, you're welcome, I'm always happy to help! So, the repair to the wiring harness cost me a tidy €170, which is no mean feat, but the car has been running like a dream ever since. And the best thing about it: since my visit to the mechanic, the problem with the coolant thermostat has been fixed. It was really annoying that something was constantly flashing and beeping. But it's been quiet ever since. Everything is back to normal, so my worries have vanished into thin air! So my tip for you: Have a professional look at it, sometimes it's really worth its weight in gold. And maybe you'll be lucky and it'll be a minor issue for you too. Good luck!

Wow, 170 €, that's quite a chunk... But if it's really stress-free afterwards, then maybe it's worth going the same way. Hopefully I'll have better luck with my mechanic this time. At least now I know what to look out for. Your advice was really helpful, thanks for that! Now it's just a case of keeping my fingers crossed that it's only a minor issue. Thanks again and take care!
