It wasn't cheap, but the problem with the electric fan has been fixed since then, so it was worth it to me. Hello, I had a similar problem with my 2012 Mercedes GLK Diesel. The electric fan "control unit/resistor" was actually defective, just as you suspect. As a result, the air conditioning system was only blowing warm air and the car was constantly overheating. When I had this checked at the garage, it turned out that the whole thing really is a serious problem and should not be taken lightly. After a detailed diagnosis, it was determined that the control unit and the electric fan resistor needed to be replaced in order to fix the problem properly.
