Overheating 2003 Mazda Axela: Seeking Advice and Experiences with Coolant Temperature Sensor Issues

Overheating

Check engine light on

Hey! I've got a bit of a situation with my 2003 Mazda Axela with a gasoline engine and 166,759 km on it. Recently, it's been overheating, and the pesky check engine light has been popping up. I had a hunch it might be an issue with the coolant temperature sensor. Had a pretty bad run-in with a mechanic last time and I'm a bit hesitant to step back into that world. Anyone out there dealt with similar symptoms? What was your experience with the mechanic like? Further advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there sounds a lot like an issue I had with my 2006 Mazda Atenza not too long ago. Overheating and that annoying check engine light. Turned out it was indeed the coolant temperature sensor. The culprit? Cable connection/plug turned out to be defective, which caused these symptoms. Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the mechanic but hey, we've all had our days. Infact, I had mine taken to this garage near my place. They did a pretty solid job. The mechanic there had a thorough look at what was happening. Ended up changing the sensor and fixing the defective cable connection/plug. Seemed like a significant enough issue that they suggested not waiting too long to fix it. It's still running good as ever since then, no more overheating, no more annoying lights. Remember, your car's health is key, and it's worth getting it seen, even if the previous experience wasn't your cup of tea. By the way, always try to go with a place someone you trust had a good experience with - it can make all the difference. Keep your chin up your Axela will be back on the road soon!

Hey! Super glad to hear your Atenza got sorted out without much fuss! Your ordeal sounds identical to mine, glad it wasn't any more severe. Going by what you said, I need to take my Axela back to the garage. Pardon me, but can you recall how much the whole fix set you back by? And did you have to deal with any other problems post the repair? Would appreciate your insight thanks again!

Yo, good on ya for deciding to take your Axela back in. Smart move! To answer your questions about costs, fixing the defective cable connection/plug came to about 95 quid, give or take. Totally worth it too, considering how smoothly my Atenza's been running since. And about your other question, regarding any further issues post-repair? Thankfully, not a blooming one. After sorting out that coolant temp sensor fault, my ride's been as good as new. No more drama with overheating or any pesky check engine lights flashing. Seriously it's like a huge weight off your shoulders. Don't let your past experience with the garage get the best of you. You've got this!

Cheers for all the advice! It's heartening to hear not just about the hassle-free fix but also the drama-free run following that. At 95 quid, I reckon it's a reasonable price to pay for such peace of mind. Hearing about your experience has definitely put a lot of my hesitation to rest. I guess I really ought to be hitting up my local garage soon. Now, here's hoping my Axela's story ends as happily as your Atenza's did! Thanks a ton again, appreciate your help!
