Overheated VW Polo 2007: Search for solutions and workshop recommendations

Check engine light on

Overheating

Hey guys, I have a small problem with my VW Polo, built in 2007 and soon 400k km on the clock. It keeps overheating and my indicator light is on. I'm pretty sure that the coolant temperature sensor is no longer working. Have any of you ever had this happen? How did you solve the problem? The last time I had less luck and got rather poor service. I would be grateful for any tips!

Hey, I recently had a similar problem with my 2010 VW Golf. The crux of the matter was the water pump, which was unfortunately broken. In the end, it had to be completely replaced. Did your indicator light come on all the time and did your car overheat quickly? I had exactly the same thing before my visit to the garage. I was lucky that it stayed that way and no major engine damage was to be feared. Definitely get it checked out, man. And thanks for asking about garages, but I only know my own backyard, so that's all I can say. Good luck that it's something more harmless!

Hey, thanks for your reply! It's a bit reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who's had to experience something like this. Do you happen to remember how much it cost you to replace the water pump? And has anything else come up with your Golf since you fixed that? Thanks again for your feedback and your time!

Hey, that's what we're here for, to help each other, right? Well, the cost of repairing the water pump was a bit higher at almost €600, I can't remember exactly. Since then, my Golf has been running without any further problems. All the best, buddy!

Overheating can be caused by several issues such as a faulty thermostat, a leak in the cooling system, a blocked radiator, or a failing water pump. Start by checking the coolant level when the engine is cold. If it's low, fill it up and monitor if it drops again, which would indicate a leak. If the coolant level is fine, it might be best to have a mechanic inspect the other components I mentioned. Remember, overheating can lead to serious engine damage, so it's important to address this issue promptly.
