Outlander PHEV Power Loss & Shaking: Common Leak Issue?

Hey everyone, need help with my 2012 Outlander PHEV that's acting up. Engine light is on and I'm dealing with power loss, rough idle with shaking, and jerking/hissing sounds during acceleration. I suspect an intake leak but want to be sure before heading to the shop. Has anyone encountered similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Any insights would be really helpful.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2014 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV (I have some experience working on hybrid cars). The symptoms were almost identical to what you're describing. Turned out to be a cracked intake hose, pretty common issue actually. Took it to my local workshop last month, and they found the leak pretty quickly. Cost me about 100€ to get the hose replaced, but it fixed all those symptoms, the power loss, shaking, and that annoying hissing sound. What's your mileage and have you noticed any specific times when the symptoms get worse (like during cold starts or when it's raining)? Might help narrow things down. Also, did you get any specific error codes with that check engine light?

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is at 130258 KM and the last service was done about 3 months ago. Yeah, I've noticed the symptoms are definitely worse during cold starts, especially in the morning. Haven't checked the error codes yet, planning to get that done tomorrow. Your intake hose situation sounds pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. That's actually a relief to hear it might be something relatively straightforward and not too expensive to fix. Were there any warning signs before your hose completely gave out?

Hey again! Yeah, looking back, there were definitely some warning signs before my intake hose completely failed. In my Eclipse Cross, I first noticed a slight whistling sound that would come and go, especially when accelerating. I actually ignored it for about a week (not my smartest move ). The symptoms got progressively worse over about two weeks. Started with that subtle whistle, then the idle got rougher, and finally, that full-on power loss and hissing sound kicked in. Sounds exactly like what you're experiencing! The cold start issues were a big red flag for me too, that's when it was most noticeable. At 130K km, you're right around where these issues tend to pop up. Mine gave out at about 125K km. Honestly, the hoses just get brittle over time, especially with all the heat cycles they go through. Quick tip, when you get the codes read tomorrow, if you see anything like P0171 (system too lean) or P0300 (unusual misfire), that'll pretty much confirm the intake leak theory. My car threw both those codes when it happened. Keep us posted about those error codes when you get them! And yeah, don't stress too much, it's usually a pretty straightforward fix.

Thanks so much for all the details! This really helps put my mind at ease. It's like you're describing my exact situation with that whistling sound, I had been hearing it for a couple of weeks but didn't think much of it at first. Will definitely get those codes checked first thing tomorrow and keep an eye out for P0171 and P0300. Really appreciate you breaking down how your symptoms progressed too, makes me feel better knowing I caught it before it got any worse. I'll update the thread once I get it checked out at the shop. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience!
