Outlander PHEV's Mystery Shutdown: Generator or Battery?

Dim or flickering lights

Weak battery when starting the engine

Engine shuts off by itself

ABS/DSC system is not working

Hey all! Having troubles with my 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The engine unsual dies, and I'm dealing with multiple electrical issues, dim lights, weak starts, and the ABS system isn't working. I suspect it's the generator, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's had similar problems. Did you get it fixed? What was the actual cause? Any input on repair costs and workshop experiences would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with my 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV (I've got some experience working on hybrids). The symptoms were exactly like yours, unusual engine shutdowns, electrical gremlins, the works. Turned out the generator was shot. Took it to my trusted mechanic who specializes in hybrid vehicles, and yep, the generator needed replacing. Set me back about 960 Euro, but it fixed everything, no more issues since then. What's your mileage and have you noticed any warning lights? Would help to know these details to confirm if it's the same problem I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is currently at 88105 KM and I just had my last service about 3 weeks ago. Actually, the check engine light came on briefly last week but disappeared after a restart. Super helpful to know about your generator issue, might be facing the same thing. Did your mechanic mention how long the repair took? I'm trying to figure out how long I might need a rental car if it comes to that.

Hey there! Thanks for asking about the repair time. Yes, I had the same car (2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV), and when my generator went bad, the symptoms were identical to what you're describing. The warning light behavior you mentioned, coming on and disappearing, that's exactly what happened with mine too! To answer your question about timing: my mechanic had the car for about 2-3 days total. The actual repair only took about 6-7 hours, but they needed to order the part first. Since my mechanic specializes in hybrids, he always keeps me in the loop, told me the generator failure is actually more common in PHEVs than people think, especially around the 80-90K km mark. Quick tip from my experience: if you're planning to get it fixed, I'd recommend getting it done sooner rather than later. I waited a bit too long and ended up stranded once when the engine completely died. Not fun! If you want, I can share my mechanic's contact info, he's really good with these hybrid systems and might be able to give you a more accurate timeline based on parts availability in your area. Just curious, have you noticed any strange humming noise before the engine cuts out? That was another symptom I had that I forgot to mention earlier.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info, this is exactly what I needed! I haven't noticed any humming noise yet, but I'll definitely keep an ear out for it now. You've convinced me to get this checked out ASAP, don't fancy being stranded somewhere! And yes, I'd really appreciate your mechanic's contact info if you could share it. Better to go with someone who knows these systems well, especially since my car's mileage is right in that danger zone you mentioned. I'll start looking into rental options for a few days just to be prepared. Really grateful for all your help and the heads up about not waiting too long. I'll probably get this sorted next week. Thanks again!
