Outlander Key Fob Mystery: DIY Fix or Pro Repair?

Key fob issues

Hi everyone, having trouble with my 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid (110k km). My key fob has been acting up lately, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I think it might be the antenna in the bumper, but I'm hesitant to go back to my usual mechanic after a recent bad experience there. Has anyone dealt with similar key fob issues in their Outlander? If so, what was the actual problem and where did you get it fixed? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and repair costs. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2017 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Hybrid last summer. The key fob was super inconsistent, working one minute and completely dead the next. Turned out it was indeed the antenna cable connection in the front bumper that had come loose and was partially corroded. Took it to a certified Mitsubishi dealer since I'd read this was a known issue in some models. They found that the cable connection to the antenna had deteriorated due to water exposure. It wasn't a major repair, just needed the cable connection cleaned, resealed, and properly secured. The antenna itself was fine. It's been working perfectly since then. While it wasn't a serious mechanical issue, it's definitely something you want to get fixed because it can leave you stranded if the key fob stops working completely. Your symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced. I'd recommend going to a Mitsubishi dealer for this one, they know these systems well.

Thanks for sharing that info! I had the exact same problem fixed at my local Mitsubishi dealer about 6 months ago. Mind if I ask how much you ended up paying for the repair? Just wondering if I got a fair deal. Also, has everything been working smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks with the key fob?

Hey again! Glad to hear you got it sorted out at the dealer. Since you asked, I paid exactly 260€ for the repair, which covered fixing that faulty cable connection to the bumper antenna. Honestly, looking back now, it was money well spent because the fix has been absolutely solid. My key fob has been working like a charm ever since I had it done, no more of that frustrating on-again-off-again business! I remember being a bit worried about the cost at first, but considering how essential a working key fob is, I'd say it was worth every cent. Plus, getting it done at the dealer meant they knew exactly what they were dealing with. Haven't noticed any other quirks at all, it's back to working just like when the car was new. How's yours been holding up since the repair? Sounds like we both had pretty much identical issues there!

Hey, thanks for the follow-up! Actually, I feel a bit better now hearing your repair cost, I paid around 275€, so pretty much in the same ballpark. After that frustrating experience with my regular mechanic, I finally took it to the Mitsubishi dealer last week. They fixed it right away, and honestly, it's been working perfectly since then. The funny part was when I got there, my key fob decided to completely die right in the dealership parking lot! Talk about perfect timing, right? The mechanic got a good laugh out of that one. But they were super professional about it, got me in quickly, and had it sorted within a couple of hours. They showed me the corroded cable connection, it was pretty nasty from all the water damage. Really appreciate everyone's input on this. It's definitely a relief to have it working properly again, no more standing in the rain clicking the key fob like a maniac! Think I'll stick with the dealer for these kinds of specialized repairs from now on. Thanks again for all the help!
