Outlander Hybrid Top Stuck? Hall Sensor May Be Culprit

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

|

Convertible top cannot be opened or closed

Hey there, I've got a 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid (100,497 km) and I'm dealing with some convertible top issues. The top won't open or close, and there's a warning light on my dash. I suspect it might be the Hall sensor, but I had a pretty bad experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your experiences and maybe get a recommendation for a reliable mechanic who knows their way around convertible systems. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, had a similar issue with my 2015 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV last summer. The warning light and non-responsive top turned out to be a faulty cable connection in the convertible top system. The wires near the main control module had gotten corroded and were causing intermittent communication issues. Initially thought it was the Hall sensor too, but after taking it to my current mechanic, they did a proper diagnostic. They found multiple points where the cables needed to be cleaned and reseated. There was also a loose plug connection that needed fixing. It wasn't a super serious repair, but leaving it unfixed could've led to bigger problems with the control module. Mike at AutoTech (if you're in the area) really knows his stuff with Mitsubishi hybrids and convertible systems. He's worked extensively on various Outlander models too. Fixed mine in about half a day. Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! This definitely sounds similar to what I'm dealing with. I'm curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since then, or have you had any other issues pop up with the convertible top?

Hey again! Glad to help! Yeah, after seeing Mike at AutoTech for my Eclipse Cross PHEV, everything's been working perfectly. The repair was actually pretty reasonable, came to just 95€ to fix those faulty cables and plug connections. He found that pesky "Incorrect signal from Hall sensor" error and sorted it right out. The top's been working like a dream since then, smooth opening and closing, no more warning lights on the dash. Haven't had a single problem with it in months. It's such a relief when you find a mechanic who actually knows what they're doing and doesn't try to upsell you on unnecessary repairs! Honestly, it was worth every penny to get it fixed properly. These convertible systems can be tricky, but once you get the electrical connections sorted out, they're usually pretty reliable. Let me know if you end up getting yours fixed, would love to hear how it goes!

Thanks for all the great info! I actually took your advice and got it fixed last week. You were right about those electrical connections, turns out I had a similar issue with corroded wiring, though mine cost a bit more at 150 € since they had to replace some components too. The mechanic I found, Dave's Auto Shop, was really thorough and explained everything. Got to test the convertible top all weekend, and it's working perfectly now! No more warning lights, and the top moves smoothly both ways. Such a relief after dealing with this problem for weeks. It's funny how something that seems so major can often be fixed without breaking the bank. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it helped me understand what I was dealing with and gave me the confidence to get it checked out. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction!
