Outlander Gear Display Dead? Clutch Switch May Be Culprit

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

|

Gear selection display in the speedometer without function

Hey everyone, I've got a 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander that's acting up. The gear selection indicator on my dash isn't working, and there's a warning light on. I suspect it might be related to the clutch pedal switch, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear what the actual problem was and how your mechanic fixed it. Any insights would be super helpful. Thanks!

Hey there! I've had some experience with cars (low experience level here, mostly basic maintenance stuff). Had a similar issue with my 2014 Mitsubishi ASX (pretty close to your Outlander!). Same symptoms, gear indicator acting weird and warning light coming on. Turned out it was exactly what you suspected, a faulty connection at the clutch switch. Took it to my regular workshop, and they found the cable connection was loose and partially damaged. Cost me around 95€ to fix, they basically replaced the wiring and plug connection to the clutch switch. Quick question, when did you first notice these symptoms? And does it happen all the time or just occasionally? These details might help confirm if we're dealing with the same issue. Once you share more info, I can tell you what else to look out for. My mechanic actually showed me a few things to check before bringing it in next time!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I first noticed these issues about a week ago. It's pretty consistent, happens every time I start the car. Mine's at 66603 KM and had its last service about 2 months ago. The symptoms started right after I went through a really heavy rainstorm, so I'm wondering if water might have gotten somewhere it shouldn't. The warning light stays on throughout my drive, which is what really concerns me. Does that sound similar to what you experienced with your ASX? Think I'll try checking those cable connections you mentioned before taking it to the shop.

Hey again! That's really interesting about the rainstorm, it actually sounds super similar to what happened with my ASX! Mine started acting up after some heavy rain too, and yes, the warning light was constant just like yours. I'm even more convinced now that we're dealing with the same issue. My ASX had about 72,000 KM when this happened, so pretty close to your mileage. The water definitely played a role in my case, my mechanic found that moisture had gotten into the connector housing and caused some corrosion on the contacts. That's probably why the cable connection went bad. Quick tip from my experience, before you take it to the shop, try checking the area around the clutch pedal for any obvious signs of moisture or corrosion. In my case, there was actually a slight discoloration around the connector that was a dead giveaway. But be careful poking around there, I learned the hard way that it's better to look than touch! Let me know what you find. If it's similar to what I dealt with, it should be a pretty straightforward fix. My ASX has been running perfectly since they sorted it out, no more warning lights or gear display issues.

Thanks so much for all this detail, it's super helpful! I just checked around the clutch pedal area like you suggested, and guess what? There's definitely some discoloration there, just like you described. I think you've nailed it! I feel much better knowing it's likely not something major and that it's a relatively cheap fix. I'll get it into the shop tomorrow and specifically mention checking the cable connections and connector housing for water damage. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's saved me a lot of worry! I'll update you once it's fixed, but I'm pretty confident this is exactly what's going on with mine. Thanks again for walking me through this!
