Hey everyone, I'm having serious trouble with my 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Diesel (88k km) and I'm super nervous about taking it to the mechanic after a previous bad experience. The engine's acting up badly, lots of black smoke when I accelerate, power loss, and this annoying whistling/hissing sound. It's also really unstable at idle, shaking and sometimes stalling. Check engine light is on too. I think it might be something with the boost pressure system, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. Did you get it fixed? What was the actual problem, and how much did repairs cost? Any recommendations for reliable mechanics who know their way around Outlander diesels? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had very similar issues with my 2016 Mitsubishi ASX Diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced with a faulty wastegate valve. The black smoke, power loss, and that distinct whistling noise are classic signs. When I took mine to the garage, they diagnosed it through diagnostic testing and boost pressure measurements. The wastegate wasn't regulating the turbo pressure properly, which was causing all these problems. They had to replace the entire wastegate actuator assembly. It was a serious job that took about a day and a half to complete. The fix solved all the issues, no more smoke, power came back, and the engine runs smooth as silk now. The turbo whistling disappeared completely. It's definitely not something you want to leave unattended as it can lead to more serious turbo damage. I'd recommend finding a garage that specializes in Mitsubishi diesels. The wastegate issue isn't uncommon on these engines, so an experienced mechanic should spot it right away.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful because I've been worried about my turbo system too. Glad to hear you got it all sorted out. I'm curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the wastegate replacement? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? I'm trying to budget for my repair and want to make sure I'm prepared for any potential follow-ups.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, since my last post, I actually went ahead and got it fixed at the mechanic. The diagnosis was spot-on, it was indeed the Wastegate valve causing all the trouble. The total bill came to 860€, which included parts and labor. I know it's not cheap, but honestly, it was worth every penny! Since getting that Malfunction in the boost pressure system sorted, my ASX has been running like a dream. It's been about a year now, and I haven't had a single issue pop up. The engine's super smooth, no more black smoke, and that annoying whistling sound is completely gone. The power's back to normal too, which makes driving so much more enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend just getting it done rather than waiting around, these turbo issues can get worse if you leave them too long. Plus, the peace of mind knowing everything's working properly is fantastic. Trust me, once you get it fixed, you'll notice the difference immediately! Let me know if you need any other info about the repair. Always happy to help out a fellow Mitsubishi owner!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! I actually just got back from the mechanic today, and wow, what a relief! You were right about everything. Took it to this place that specializes in Mitsubishis, and they found the same wastegate issue. My bill was a bit higher at 950€, but they also replaced some worn-out gaskets they found while doing the work. The difference is incredible! Can't believe I was driving around with it acting up for so long. No more black smoke, the engine's super quiet now, and that scary whistling sound is gone. The idle is perfect too, no more of that shaking that was making me nervous. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed. The mechanic said I caught it just in time before it could cause any damage to the turbo. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it gave me the confidence to get it sorted instead of putting it off. Feels great to have my car running properly again!
