Outlander's Coolant Crisis: Overheating Alert!

Check engine light on

|

Overheating

Hey everyone, my 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Diesel is having overheating issues and the check engine light is on. I suspect it might be related to the coolant pump, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar problems. Has anyone had this fixed? What was the actual cause and how did your mechanic resolve it? Really appreciate any insights on this!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2015 Mitsubishi ASX Diesel (I have some experience working on cars, but nothing too advanced). When I first noticed the overheating and check engine light, I took it to my regular workshop. They found that the cable connecting to the coolant pump control unit was damaged, causing intermittent pump failures. The fix cost me around 220€, and since then, everything's been running smooth. Which trim level is your Outlander, and how many miles/kilometers has it done? This info would help me understand if you might be dealing with the same problem.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Outlander has 104966 KM on the clock, and I just had it serviced last month. Actually, my issue seems a bit different because I'm also noticing a slight whining noise when the engine's running. Did you experience any unusual sounds with yours when it was overheating? I'm hoping it's just a cable like in your case, but that noise has me worried it might be the pump itself. I'll probably take it to the dealer this week to be safe.

Hey again! Thanks for the additional info about the noise. Actually, now that you mention it, I did have a whining sound too on my ASX, but I didn't mention it earlier because I wasn't sure if it was related. But yeah, in my case, even though the damaged cable was the main issue, my mechanic also found that the pump bearing was starting to go bad, that's what was causing the whining noise. When the bearing starts failing, it can make that distinct whining sound you're describing. Mine got progressively louder over time. Since you've got about 105K on the clock (mine was around 98K when this happened), it could definitely be the pump itself needing replacement. Good call on taking it to the dealer, while my cable issue was a cheap fix, I actually ended up replacing the whole pump a few months later when the bearing completely failed. Cost me about 580€ for parts and labor, but it was worth it for peace of mind. Just make sure they check both the electrical connections AND the pump itself. Better to catch these things early! Keep us posted on what the dealer finds, I'm curious if it's similar to what I experienced!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's really helpful to know about the bearing, actually makes me feel a bit better knowing someone else has dealt with the same symptoms. I've just booked it in at the dealer for tomorrow morning. You're right about catching it early, I'd rather spend the money now than risk bigger problems down the road. The price you mentioned for the pump replacement isn't as bad as I was fearing, honestly. I'll definitely update this thread once I get the diagnosis from the dealer. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and advice, it's been super helpful in understanding what I might be dealing with!
