Older BMW 5 Series: Difficulty starting and loss of power

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Car won't start

Hi everyone, I have a slightly older BMW 5 Series (2015, diesel, 173,824 km mileage) and it's currently acting up. The check engine light is on, the power is diminishing and it often won't even start - think it could be due to pressure fluctuations in one cylinder. Had a bad run at the last garage, so I'm looking for your experiences. Has anyone had similar problems before? How did you deal with it and what was your experience with the garage? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I recently had a similar problem with my 2012 BMW 3 series. Engine light on, loss of power, difficulty starting - sounds pretty familiar. Like you, I suspected that there might be pressure fluctuations in one of the cylinders. At the garage they found that there really was a problem with a cylinder - specifically one of the injectors. It was a pretty serious problem, as damaged injectors can lead to serious engine damage if left untreated. So yes, I would recommend you get it checked as soon as possible as it could be a serious fault. Googling or getting advice from friends is all well and good, but when it comes to potential engine damage, if in doubt, call a professional - even if your last experience with the garage wasn't so rosy. Hope this helps you. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for the tip! It's really no fun when your own sled is so buggy, is it? Your problem actually sounds very similar to mine. Do you remember how much it cost you to have the injection valve replaced in the workshop? And have there been any other problems with your BMW 3 Series since then? I'm really looking forward to hearing how it went for you. Many thanks for your help!

Hi, of course, I can give you some more information. Since the visit to the workshop, the difficulties with the pressure fluctuations in one cylinder have actually disappeared. The guys there did a really good job and repaired the damage. On the subject of costs, it's really a bit strange, because the subsequent faults that came out of other fault memory entries were fixed for €0. Apparently they had a good day at the workshop, or my loyal visits have paid off. So far, I haven't had any further problems with my BMW 3 Series, and in my experience, I think your BMW 5 Series is definitely in good hands if you find a garage you can trust. Take heart, hope your car runs smoothly again soon. If you have any questions - keep them coming!

Hey, that sounds really encouraging! It makes me feel better to know that your car has been running well since your visit to the garage. Well, that takes away some of my worries. Fingers crossed that I find an equally competent garage, and then at zero cost, that would be heaven. I'll get in touch with the garage and keep my fingers crossed that they get the problem under control just as well as they did with your car. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my post. It has really helped me. And if there's anything new, I'll definitely be in touch. Until then, stay healthy and always have a good trip with your BMW 3 Series!
