Oil Light and Metal Shavings in 2019 Hyundai Kona: Potential Sensor Fault?

Metal shavings in oil

Hey everyone, I'm driving a 2019 Hyundai Kona-Gasoline with about 102,126 KM on it. Recently, the oil light started showing and I've noticed metal shavings in the motor oil. To top it all off, a strange warning light popped up on the speedometer. My best guess is this may be a faulty oil level sensor signal, but after a nasty run-in with my last mechanic, I'd love to hear from you all first. Anyone else had similar problems and what your experiences at the shop were like? Would appreciate any kind of input or advice. Thanks a bunch!

Hey! I had a pretty similar issue with my 2016 Hyundai Tucson a while back. Just like yours, my oil light popped up out of nowhere and the diagnosis ended up being a defective oil level sensor cable connection. We dealt with this at the garage by simply replacing the cable. But let me tell you, those metal shavings in your motor oil, that could be a serious red flag indicating engine wear. If I were you, I’d go to a mechanic I trust and get this checked as soon as possible. An engine rebuild or replacement is something you really want to avoid. Also, you mentioned a strange warning light on your speedometer, be sure to also get that checked out, might be related or a separate issue. All the best with your car trouble!

Hey there, I appreciate your insight. It's a bit comforting to know that someone else has dealt with a similar sensor issue. It seems like your Tucson's problem wasn't as daunting as I feared mine might be. Could I ask you how much that cable replacement cost you? I'd like to have an idea before I approach a mechanic. About those metal shavings they've got me worried. You're right, I should have it checked ASAP. Keeping my fingers crossed it's not serious engine wear. By the way, since you’ve fixed the sensor problem, has anything else popped up, related or unrelated? Just trying to braced for any surprise shocks. Cheers!

Hey, yeah the sensor issue was definitely a relief. It cost me about 165 Euro to get that pesky oil level sensor cable connection sorted out. I reckon you should be prepared to shell out something similar. And do get those metal shavings checked pronto, you don't wanna be dealing with a kaput engine, trust me. And to answer your question, since the mechanic fixed the faulty oil level sensor signal, my Tucson has been purring like a kitten - no new problems or surprises to write home about for now. But you know how it is with cars, one fix here, another there. So, yeah, just keep one eye on the road and the other on your ride. Safe driving!

Hey, thanks a million for sharing your experience! So, I've prepared myself for shelling out approximately 165 Euro for the sensor issue. And absolutely, I'll get those metal shavings checked out without delay. It's certainly good to hear your Tucson has been running well ever since you fixed the sensor problem. I guess cars are like that, aren't they? A constantly evolving puzzle. You've been immensely helpful. I’ll shrug off any anxiety and focus on getting her fixed. Safe journeys!
