Octavia oxygen sensor issue

Hi, hoping someone can give me a bit of advice. I have a 2001 Skoda Octavia with a gasoline engine and about 223000 km on the clock. Recently, the check engine light came on. I plugged in an OBD reader and it's showing an error related to the oxygen sensor heater. I've noticed the fuel consumption is a bit higher than usual. I've had a quick look and it seems like the cable or plug connection of the component might be defective. Any ideas where to start with sensor testing?

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my Octavia a while back. Check engine light was on, and the car was guzzling fuel. For me, it turned out to be the oxygen sensor as well. Have you had the exhaust system checked? Sometimes a leak there can cause similar symptoms.

Thanks for the quick reply! Just to clarify, when you say oxygen sensor, are we talking about the one before or after the catalytic converter? And did you manage to fix it yourself, or did you take it to a workshop?

Yep, I meant the one before the catalytic converter, the one closer to the engine. Honestly, I'm no mechanic, so I took it straight to a workshop. They did some sensor testing and confirmed it was a faulty sensor, probably due to corrosion. If you're not comfortable with exhaust system bits and bobs, I'd suggest doing the same. Easier and safer in the long run.

Big thanks for the advice! I took it to a local mechanic, and you were spot on. It was indeed the oxygen sensor – faulty sensor and a corroded connector. They replaced the sensor, cleaned up the connection, and now the check engine light is gone. Cost me about 95€ all in. Appreciate the help!
