Noisy ASX Diesel: Cold Start Issues & Exhaust Mystery

Loud exhaust

|

Loud engine when cold

Hey all, I'm dealing with an issue on my 2017 Mitsubishi ASX Diesel. The engine is unusually noisy when cold, and there's a loud exhaust sound that wasn't there before. I suspect it might be related to the exhaust flap, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone experienced something similar? I'd really appreciate if you could share how your mechanic diagnosed and fixed it, and what the repair process looked like. Thanks!

Hey there! I've had some experience with cars and faced a similar issue with my 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Diesel. The symptoms were exactly like yours, loud exhaust noise and that annoying cold start rumble. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed a faulty exhaust flap actuator. The fix wasn't too complicated, they replaced the flap mechanism and recalibrated the system. Cost me around 190€, and the noise disappeared completely. What's your mileage on the ASX? Also, does the noise get better after the engine warms up? This info would help me share more relevant details from my experience.

Thanks for your input! My mileage is currently at 97558 KM, and yes, the noise does get better once the engine warms up. Had my last service about 2 months ago, but they didn't mention anything unusual with the exhaust system. The price you mentioned for the fix sounds reasonable, I think I'll get it checked out at my local workshop. Did you notice any other symptoms before getting it fixed?

Hey again! Actually, now that you mention it, I did notice a few other things before getting mine fixed. Around the 95K mark on my Outlander, I started hearing this weird rattling sound, especially during cold mornings. Also, my exhaust note would unsual get louder while driving, like the car couldn't decide if it wanted to be quiet or sound like a sports car One thing I forgot to mention in my previous reply, before I got it fixed, I also noticed slightly higher fuel consumption. Not much, maybe 0.5L/100km more, but it was noticeable. The mechanic later explained that when the flap malfunctions, it can mess with the back pressure in the exhaust system, which affects fuel efficiency. Since your symptoms are so similar to what I experienced, and your mileage is pretty close to when mine started acting up, I'm even more convinced it's the same issue. Just a heads up, make sure they check the electrical connections too. In my case, they found some corrosion on the actuator's wiring that needed cleaning. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out! Always happy to share experiences with a fellow Mitsubishi owner

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's really helpful to know about the fuel consumption and the wiring issue, now that you mention it, I have noticed my fuel efficiency isn't as good as it used to be. I'll definitely get them to check the electrical connections when I take it in. I've already booked an appointment for next Tuesday at my local Mitsubishi specialist, so I'll update the thread once I know what's going on. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's given me a much better idea of what to expect. Fingers crossed it's as straightforward a fix as yours was! Thanks again!
