Car won't start

Hey folks, I've got a bit of a puzzle with my 2020 Nissan Cima. It's got around 169k clicks on it and lately I've been noticing some concerning signs. When I step on it, black smoke puffs out the tailpipe. The engine's been running rough, seems like it's lost its mojo, and it's been stalling and shaking at idle. The dang check-engine light is on and the car's been guzzling gas more than usual. Worst is, sometimes she flat out refuses to turn over! I'm no mechanic, but something tells me it might be related to a bad ignition coil or misfire, but the last time to the garage gave me some serious trust issues. Anybody experienced anything similar with their ride? What was your mechanic's verdict, and did you have a decent experience with them? Appreciate any advice you can give.

Hey, I reckon you're on the right track there with your hunch about a bad ignition coil. Had something a bit similar last year with my 2017 Nissan Skyline. The engine was acting all sorts of weird. The idle was rough, shake and bake style, and like your's, the Skyline also had her diva moments, wouldn't start, no matter how I sweet-talked her. Let's not even talk about the extra juice she was sucking. My mechanic found out the problem was a defective cable connection to the ignition coil. The bad connection messed up firing the spark plug, resulting in the engine running rough. It's quite a common problem apparently, especially for Nissans with a bit of mileage on them. Doesn't herald the carapocalypse but definitely something you'll want to sort soon. If I were you, I'd head on over to a reputable garage and let them have a look. Just double-check their diagnosis, ask them to show you the problem and explain what needs to be done. It worked out fine for my Skyline and me. Hope this helps!

Hey there, reading both of your experiences just had me taking a trip down memory lane with my old Nissan. Sounds like classic symptoms of a bad ignition coil to me too, had a similar issue with mine. But you know what, it turned out to be more than just that. Along with the coil, I had to replace the spark plugs and also had a minor problem with the air-fuel ratio sensor. It was refusing to turn over pretty often until I got all those fixed. Once done, it was back to being its old reliable self, no more smoke signals or diva behavior. Just a heads up though, the fix wasn't exactly what you'd call cheap. Can't remember the exact amount right off the top of my head. Any chance you guys remember how much you ended up shelling out for your fixes? And since the repair, have you noticed any other issues popping up? Fingers crossed, hope it stays smooth sailing for you both.

Hey, good to see you've got your old Nissan revving smoothly after all the fixes! It's a bit of a shocker realizing how a little mishap with the ignition coils can turn your ride into a stubborn mule. Lucky for me, once I got the cable connection to the ignition coil sorted, she started purring like a kitten again. As for the size of the dent in my wallet, it was a cool 365€. You're right, it's not exactly pocket change, but hey, better than shelling out on a new motor, am I right? After coughing up the cash and getting that cable connection sorted, I've had no more issues with the ignition coil misfiring. Keeping my fingers crossed too, hoping it'll be all smooth sailing from now on! Thanks for your concern and keep us posted about your Cima!

I really appreciate you guys giving your insight - it gives me a lot more to go off of. The experiences you shared sound exactly like the issues my Cima has been having. I'm going to take your advice and get it checked out at a trusted garage. Having an idea of what might be wrong will definitely help me talk to the mechanic and understand the fix. I've taken note of the potential cost. It's a big chunk of change but sounds like it's worth it to have the car running smoothly again. I'll make sure to update you guys once I get it sorted. Fingers crossed it's just a faulty cable or a bad ignition coil and nothing more. Thanks once again for your help!
