In my case, it was a faulty cable connecting the control unit to the sat nav. In the end, it was much cheaper to replace the faulty parts than to buy a new sat nav. So before you get too worried, it might be a good idea to take it to a garage first. They can tell you exactly what is broken and how much a repair would cost.
