Initially thought it was software related, but on closer inspection we found it was due to physical issues with the connection wire itself. Had to take it to the dealership in the end as I wasn't able to fix it myself. So, no frills, it's a serious issue that can't be fixed with a toolbox and some hope. Workshop then replaced the cable connection and nothing has snagged since. Consider it and good luck with it.

After the repair, I had no further problems with the navigation system or the audio system. So, everything in the green zone since then.
