Mitsubishi Town Box Electrical Nightmare: Terminal 30 Issue?

Fault stored

|

Weak battery when starting the engine

|

General electric malfunction

|

Dim or flickering lights

Hey everyone, having trouble with my 2004 Mitsubishi Town Box (gas engine). Getting multiple electrical issues, dashboard warning lights, battery struggles during start-up, and lights keep dimming/flickering. Diagnostic shows a stored fault code. I suspect it might be related to terminal 30, but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar electrical problems on their Town Box? Would love to hear what the actual problem was and how your mechanic fixed it. Thanks!

Hey there! I have some experience with car maintenance and had a similar issue with my 2006 Mitsubishi Space Star (gas). The symptoms were exactly like yours, flickering lights, hard starts, and warning lights all over the dash. Turned out my battery was shot and was causing all sorts of electrical gremlins. Took it to my regular workshop, and they found the battery wasn't holding charge properly anymore. Got it replaced for about 290€ (including labor), and all those issues disappeared instantly. What's the mileage on your Town Box? Also, how old is your current battery? Might help pinpoint if we're dealing with the same problem.

Thanks for sharing that! My Town Box just hit 130376 KM, and I actually had my last service about 2 months ago. I was thinking it might be the battery too, but the weird thing is mine's relatively new, got it replaced last year. The mechanic checked the battery during my last service and said it was fine, which makes this even more confusing. Could it be something with the alternator maybe?

Hey again! Yeah, I can totally relate to your confusion, especially since you've got a fairly new battery. You know what? This actually reminds me even more of what happened with my Space Star last winter. Initially thought it was just the battery too, but after getting that sorted and still having issues, it turned out to be the alternator after all! Since you mentioned your battery's pretty new and was checked recently, I'm now leaning towards the alternator being the culprit in your case too. In my Space Star, even with a good battery, the alternator wasn't charging it properly, which caused all those same symptoms, the flickering lights, warning lights, and starting issues. Had my mechanic test the alternator's output, and it was only putting out about 12V instead of the normal 13.5-14.5V. Ended up replacing it (cost me around 400€ with parts and labor), and that fixed everything. Maybe get your alternator tested? These symptoms are textbook alternator issues, especially since we're talking about similar Mitsubishi models. Let me know what you find out, I'm curious if we're dealing with the same thing here!

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation! You've actually made me feel a lot better about this whole situation. The alternator theory makes perfect sense, especially given all the symptoms. I've just called my mechanic and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow morning to get the alternator tested. I'll make sure they check the voltage output like you mentioned. Really appreciate you sharing your experience with the Space Star, it's super helpful to know what to expect, both in terms of the potential fix and the costs. I'll probably end up spending around the same 400€ if it turns out to be the alternator, but at least that's better than continuing to worry about unusual electrical issues while driving! I'll update the thread once I get it checked out. Thanks again for all your help!

Let our mechanics help you!
