Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross: Overheating Mystery Solved?

Overheating

|

Check engine light on

Hey everyone, my 2021 Eclipse Cross diesel is giving me headaches. The engine keeps overheating and the check engine light is on. I suspect it might be the auxiliary coolant pump, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Especially interested in workshop solutions that fixed it for good. Thanks!

Hey there! I had pretty much the same issue with my 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Diesel last year. I've got some experience working with cars, but I'm not a pro mechanic or anything. Had it checked at my local workshop, turned out it was a faulty cable connection to the coolant pump. The mechanic found it pretty quickly, and they fixed it by replacing some wiring and connectors. Cost me about 170€, but it's been running perfectly since then. Could definitely be a similar issue with your Eclipse Cross, especially since they share some components. But hey, what's your mileage and have you noticed any other warning lights? Just want to make sure we're dealing with the same thing here. Let me know these details and I might be able to help more!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is at 147,992 KM and had my last service about 3 months ago. Actually, I've noticed the temp gauge started acting up shortly after that. The weird thing is that there aren't any other warning lights except for the check engine one. The overheating seems to happen more when I'm stuck in traffic or driving at low speeds. Did your Outlander show similar patterns before you got it fixed?

Hey again! Yeah, that sounds really familiar, my Outlander was doing exactly the same thing! Mine was at around 155,000 KM when this happened, so pretty similar mileage to yours. The low-speed overheating thing really rings a bell, that's exactly what mine was doing. It would be fine on the highway, but as soon as I hit city traffic, boom, temperature would start climbing. The fact that it started after your service is interesting though... In my case, when they dug deeper, they actually found that the wiring issue was causing the pump to work intermittently, which explains why it mainly happened in slow traffic when there's less airflow through the radiator. Just to be sure, have you checked if the coolant level is okay? I know it sounds basic, but after my experience, I always check that first. Also, I'd recommend getting it checked soon, I learned the hard way that ignoring these symptoms can lead to bigger problems. My mechanic told me I was lucky I brought it in when I did! Oh, and one more thing, has your car been using more coolant than usual? That's another symptom I noticed with mine before getting it fixed.

Thanks so much for all this detailed info! It's actually a huge relief to hear your Outlander had such similar symptoms, makes me feel better about the potential fix. Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on the coolant level, and funny you mention it, I have noticed I'm having to top it up more frequently than before. I'm definitely going to get it checked out ASAP and have them look specifically at the wiring and connections to the pump. Better safe than sorry, right? I'll make an appointment with my mechanic tomorrow morning. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's been super helpful! I'll update the thread once I get it sorted out, in case anyone else runs into the same issue.
