Mitsubishi Challenger Dies While Driving, Help Needed

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey there, having some serious trouble with my 2010 Mitsubishi Challenger (Diesel). The engine keeps cutting out while driving, and sometimes won't start at all. Check engine light is on, and the diagnostic showed some coding issues. Had a bad experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their Challenger? Currently at 144,746 km. Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and recommendations for reliable mechanics who know their way around these issues. Thanks in advance!

Had the same nightmare with my 2013 Mitsubishi Pajero Diesel. Similar symptoms, unusual stalling, starting issues, and the dreaded check engine light. Turned out my previous owner had installed a third-party performance chip that wasn't properly coded. Had to get it sorted at a specialist workshop. They had to reset the entire engine management system and remove the aftermarket chip. The mechanic found that the chip was messing with the fuel mapping and causing conflicts with the original ECU. Process took about two days, they had to run multiple diagnostics and do a complete system recalibration. It was pretty serious stuff, could've damaged the engine if left unchecked. Since the fix, the car's been running perfectly for the past 18 months. If you're near any metro area, I'd strongly recommend finding an authorized Mitsubishi dealer. These engine management issues need proper diagnostic tools and expertise. Hope this helps with your decision!

Thanks that's exactly what I needed to hear! My situation sounds pretty similar to yours. I'm actually thinking about heading to the Mitsubishi dealer now after reading your experience. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole fix? And has everything stayed smooth since then, or have you run into any other problems? Would be great to know what I might be in for.

Hey again! Yeah, happy to share more details about the costs. I ended up paying 180€ to get that dodgy chip situation sorted out. Honestly, it was worth every penny, my Pajero's been running like a dream since they fixed that coding mess. The dealer spotted right away that the third-party chip was causing all the chaos, and once they removed it and got the ECU back to factory settings, all those annoying issues disappeared completely. No more unusual stalling or starting problems, it's like having a different car! It's been well over a year and a half now, and I haven't had a single problem since the fix. Trust me, going to the official Mitsubishi dealer was the right call. They knew exactly what they were dealing with and had all the proper diagnostic tools to sort it out properly. Just a heads up, the dealer might take a couple of days to complete all the diagnostics and recalibration, but it's totally worth the wait. Better to get it done right than risk any engine damage, you know what I mean? Hope this helps give you a better idea of what to expect!

Thanks so much for all the details! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. You won't believe it, my situation was pretty similar to yours! Took it to the Mitsubishi dealer like you suggested, and turned out there was an aftermarket module that the previous owner had installed. Cost me about 200€ to get everything sorted, a bit more than yours but still worth it. They had to keep my car for three days to run all the tests and reset everything. The mechanic showed me the problematic part and explained how it was messing with the engine management system. The car's running smoothly now, no more cutting out or starting issues. The check engine light's finally gone too! Really glad I listened to your advice about going to the dealer. They definitely knew their stuff and were super professional about the whole thing. Thanks again for sharing your experience, saved me from potentially making an expensive mistake by going to a regular mechanic who might not have spotted the real issue!
