Mini One preheating lamp issue

Alright, I'm officially pulling my hair out! My 2008 Mini One, with 168269 km on the clock, has this preheating lamp issue that just won't quit. It stays on permanently, plus the check engine light is now taunting me. And to add insult to injury, it's blowing smoke when accelerating. I've been reading about it, and the likely culprit is a defective preheating control unit, possibly a dodgy cable or plug connection. Could it be the vehicle heater itself? Anyone else experience this headache with their car electronics?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my Mini One. Preheating lamp wouldn't go off, and the engine light was on too. Did you check the preheating unit itself?

Yes, I checked the preheating unit visually, but how did you determine that was the problem? Is there something specific I should be looking for?

I didn't figure it out myself. A mechanic friend mentioned it could be the preheating unit. Honestly, with those symptoms, and knowing these cars, it's probably best to get it checked out by someone who knows their way around car electronics. Could save you a lot of time and frustration.

Just wanted to let you know how it went. Took it to a mechanic I trust and you were right, it was the preheating unit. They checked the cables and connections as we suspected, but it turned out the heating module itself was faulty. Replaced the whole thing for 95€. Runs like a charm now! Thanks again for your help!
